I switched to free Karma Points too, it eliminates unnecessary bookkeeping. Still under the old rules with the high karma maxes, people would still be paying LP for Karma in my games. But when a troll or obsidiman has 3 maximum karma points at Rank 1 Karma Ritual, the maximum becomes its own limitation, the other one being time. It takes three days to get those 3 karma back. With these often lower karma maxes, karma has become a precious commodity that my player characters have to be careful about. Previously characters could buy insane amounts of karma and store it, such as the windlings 60, so much that the character wouldn't run out in even many encounters strung together. Now even one encounter and they are often winded in terms of karma and damage. So the LP cost was necessary to balance the high max. Now it is not necessary. I'm pretty sure if I asked my player characters whether they like free karma + low maximum cap or pay for karma with a big maximum cap(25-60), they would choose the former. Its just simpler that way. I could even make a compromise. For example, free karma is equal to your Karma Ritual x Karma Mod. You can store more, but it costs 10 LP each, up to double the normal amount. So an obsidiman with Rank 1 Karma Ritual could regen his normal 3 for free, then overstore up to 6 at a cost of LP (30 LP over three days), and I doubt many of my Player Characters would even be willing to pay that.
