New Name-giver Race: Ptynx

I just developed a new owl-like humanoid race called the ptynx.

I’m trying to imagine your Ptynx and I’m getting Big Bird from Sesame Street, but less talkative. Sorry, I can’t help how my mind operates :twisted:

But to be constructive

It doesn’t work for me personally as it is. I think it is missing something that makes me think ohh I want to play one of those. It feels cumbersome to play, and will certainly draw unwanted attention of all kinds in populated areas. On giving it further thought :idea: I think it would make a great Assassin NPC for Kratas or a great Scout though.

The Name, I’m not really sure how to pronounce it. You should put a phonetic spelling after the Name to help people get it right.

One of the main reasons for their obscurity is their reclusive and nomadic nature:

Reclusive works for me but nomadic doesn’t, it suggests that they gather together, migrating with the seasons following other migrating prey. If that was the case many people would have seen them.

Yes the picture helps a lot to be honest.

As for the nomad bit, i wasnt thinking migratory as in birds, but as in that is one of the reasons nomadic tribes move around because they follow migratory prey. I tend to imagine nomadic people wandering from place to place in a traditional route year on year. To me at least your Ptynx is more of a vagabond but again thats just me.

I should have clarified what I mean by cumbersome, in reality they likely walk about like any one else.

Its how they are described invokes images of them being cumbersome to play. For example can hold only small items in talons, the fact that they are nocturnal and don’t operate well in daylight, harried, need to spend recovery tests, winged arms, need specially made clothes and armour (yet they don’t gather together as other Namegivers do so who makes this stuff) and they be hard to play alongside a normal group of Namegivers in non remote areas, unless you do away with the normal suspicion of corruption and Horror taint that is rife throughout Barsaive. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be interesting, but in my opinion, as written, cumbersome.

flag, they are nice.
actually cant find a weak spot.

but.. yeah.
they can fly.
i hate flyers in a rpg. even if the ptinx are less hateful than the windling, since they cant basically do nothing while flying

so, good for an npc, bad for my pc.
the idea is good anyway, will test them in a remote and secluse area of my ED campaigns

i must honestly say that I already have soooo many things figured out for this race that it's not even funny anymore xD

Just the possibilities of them being nocturnal *-* And don't underestimate them flying !
Install a few nice blood weapons into their talons, attach a poison sac and swoop down to make the perfect silent assassination !
All you need is a nice Dex and Tou to make it worthwhile ^^
As an NPC definately exactly what I was looking for ! As a PC, only if I'm playing it xD

My new group still needs a proper challenge anyway so chasing one of thse down might just be it ^^
I might even create a knack for silent walk that let's them blend with the night sky granting them surprise strikes :twisted:
