Rumor: Daldorer will commune with the Spirit bound to their Shield, and fulfill a service as requested.

From the journal of Xeviouz, Human Warrior / Horror Stalker
Dvarim, Durban, William Carver and myself are all asked by Daldorer to assist him with a deed to unlock the full potential of his shield. Daldorer has been speaking to the spirit that is bound to his shield. THe spirit indicates that he allowed itself to be bound to the shield for the defence of its Kaer. Kaer Volost. Daldorer must find out about the Kaer, escort the citizens out, if the Kaer was breached by a horror, destroy the horror and avenge Rajin. Rajin is the original bearer of the shield.

Kaer Volost was off an arm of the Talon River called the Volost river. (27.12) We take a day and do some background research about Kaer Volost and the surrounding area. Dvarim is able to secure an airship rife for us that will get us very close to the target location. When we get to the point where we need to leave the airship, Dvarim chain casts Metal Wings for the entire party and we are able to jump over the side of the air ship and not die!

As we reach the Talon Mountains, William Carver finds a safe path for us to go up. We find many caves and check them all out until we find one that has a large broken crystal in it. We go in to check that out. We are pretty sure this is a Kaer Ward, but it appears to be broken. There are a few skeletons on the ground around it. We proceed into the cave. William takes point as I almost walked into a previous trap. William is able to find a Pit Trap without any of us actually falling into it. Farther on there is a dodge trap. Next was a spike trap. Next we come across another large crystal, small then the one at the beginning, but still 3’ high. Its another Kaer Ward. Dubahn is able to analyze the crystal through PatterCraft. It is supposed to cast a Bone Shatter spell at trespassers. As William tries to disable the trap, it goes off. Williams armor absorbs most of the damage. The tunnel we are walking in empties out into a large cavern. In the distance, like the other side of the cavern, we hear some rustling sounds. What ever it is making the noise comes towards us. There are 2 ghouls, 2 piles of flesh, looks like they have no bones, and 2 reavers. Battle!!

After the battle, we rest and recover. THen continue onward down the tunnel. THe air starts to get dry, the deeper we go. We eventually come to an archway that Duhban lets us know that it is warded with protective magics. There is also a suit of armor, no, 2 suits of armor that seem to move all on their own accord. Dubhan also says there is hard to see entity in the room as well. It is a floating skull (WormSkull), and there are 2 of them. After a quick battle we are triumphant over the horror constructs. As the last suit of armor drops, it says to Daldorer he is doing very well with the shield, much better than he ever did. THis must have been Rajin.

After the battle we look around and find the Kaer door. It is still sealed. We knock but there is no answer. We head back to Throal.

From the Journal of Dubhan Goronich:

This was an interesting adventure. Daldorer the Nethermancer asked myself, William, Dvarim and Xevious to assist him in appeasing the Ally Spirit bound to his Thread Item Shield. To do so would unlock the greatest powers of the Thread Item. Said Spirit was once the protector of a Kaer, Kaer Volost, and wished to make sure that things were right there. If the Kaer was safe, make sure it remained so. If it had been broken, avenge it by removing any lurking Horrors and Horror Constructs. Make sure the spirit of Rajin, the original bearer of the Shield, was at peace.

So, off we went into the mountains, expecting trouble. We surely found it. The Kaer was apparently breached. We went amongst the outer defenses, carefully, as some of them had reset mechanisms. I found one that used a variant of the Bone Shatter spell. William attempted to disarm it, and failed. Thankfully his mystic armor kept the worst away. Similarly, he set off a couple of mundane traps, but avoided the penalties.

Once we were through the traps, we were set upon by powerful undead Horror Constructs. A couple of Boneless, two Deathless Reavers and a pair of nasty Ghouls. We were able to deal with them, but I got grabbed by one of the Boneless. Thankfully, it was weakened by the others and before it could squeeze me too much I finished it off with a Crushing Will strike. I think I've made the right choice in slotting that Spell into one of my Enhanced Matrices; being able to kill things with just an instant's time and a glance is a good thing when being grappled.

After those folks, we journeyed onwards. We were jumped by some animated armor and a couple of Wormskulls hiding in Astral Space. They weren't able to hide from me though. My Lenses design performed wonderfully on this excursion! So did my Boots. I could be wrong, but I think the Pattern of Quicksilver is evolving. I've heard of such a thing happening in my studies, but it's fascinating to see it in this.

I was able to get off a fairly powerful casting of Rampage... almost as powerful as I'm able, but I was aiming for swiftness as well as results. I hear the most powerful Spellcasters can weave Threads much faster than we mere mortals can. I look forward to finding out if my studies continue long enough. Thanks in small part to my efforts we survived, and destroyed our opponents. There appears to be more danger in Kaer Volost, but what we did was enough to satisfy the Spirit in the Shield. Making sure we weren't overwhelmed, we retreated back to Throal.

My name is William Carver. I am an 8th circle Scout, 5th circle Thief, 1 rank Journeyman and 5th circle Cavalryman.

Daldorer, Dvarim, Xevious, Dubhan, and myself traveled to Kaer Volost at the request of Daldorer, he sought to complete a deed for his shield.

The trip to the Kaer was what it was. We didn't have much trouble on the way and with the constant sailing in the air, I am finding that I wish to learn more about how the boats function, and how they stay afloat, things of that nature. Perhaps the next time I travel with the a crew of an airship I'll see about giving them a hand. Traveling by a ship isn't like traveling by land though, you see a lot, but I wonder if you miss the trees because all you see is the forest.

The Kaer itself was anything but fun. It was dangerous and I was gravely wounded in this expedition. The Kaer was full of traps and I found my skills in dealing with them lacking. I was barely saved when I sensed the danger and moved out of the way. We encountered boneless, death reavers and ghouls in one group. Two of each. The death reavers are to be feared, they wield multiple swords and had six sets of arms. They were aptly named in my opinion. The ghouls they have a poison that they can keep flowing and burning in your blood long after they bite you. The only way to stop it is to kill the ghoul. The boneless.. honestly I don't know what they did, I was busy trying to kill a ghoul that had poisoned me and staying alive.

The real problem though was the horrors that we encountered. Two of them with worms moving about their skulls. One of them stepped out and attacked Dubhan and Daldorer. I set up a charge with Charlie and was beset upon by the other one. I knew facing it alone would be death, so Charlie and I charged to the one and struck a mighty blow with Shepard's Strength. It fell short of felling the best though. These things attack by shifting the skin around your body causing grave injuries. We managed to defeated them but only just, if the fight had gone on much longer I fear that one or more of us could have died. I most certainly would have fallen and that would have broken poor charlie's heart. Though I know that death would have separated us for a time we are of one soul in two bodies and would see each other again one day.

The spirit within the shield was satisfied with what we had and we completed the deed. We have not even begun to explore Volost yet, and I fear we must return to Bamor soon as well. There are gargoyles still to seek out. So much to do. So much more to do. I had hope that the horrors were gone, and with what I have seen, I am glad I was not alive to see the true horrors that walked the land. And that damned foot print we came across all those years ago.. why did I have to think of that foot print and the potential size of a colossal undead out there somewhere. Great now some one is going to read this and want to go and hunt it or track it and will seek me out to do. Maybe I should get married, have kids and raise huttawa...

William the huttawa farmer... it could be a good dream, but I am who I am. I'm an adept. I'll die young, and I'll die hard.

William Carver
