Banish

Banish "forces a spirit back to its native astral environment" and also cancels any "tasks owed" to whomever summoned it.
So I get that a summoned spirit will just say "thank you very much for freeing me from this onerous task" and go away.
But what about a spirit who wants to be there, how long would it take it to get back if it wanted to? Is it prohibited from coming back for any fixed amount of time? I assume that what we see as "astral space" is not the "native astral environment" for many spirits, even though it may be for some ally spirits. So a Water elemental needs to come all the way back from the elemental plane of water. How long would that take to get there and back?
And what if an Ally spirit is native to what we consider "normal astral space"? Does banish just force it to dematerialize, and it can just spend it's next standard action to materialize again? So it really can't be used to get rid of them at all?
