From the Journal of Zivilyn, Windling Magician

Apparently the good people of Throal were hearing word of some unusual huttawas in the mountains nearby; specifically, that they seemed to be electrically charged. This, in turn, led to speculation that there might be a powerful node of True Air in the region, and an expedition was put together. Well, I say an expedition, but it was really a pair of adepts until they hired on a few extra hands. Helga, an Ork Air Sailor with an interest in revitalizing the construction of airships, and Dorsha, a Dwarf Elementalist who would be primarily responsible for divining the node's location and claiming it for Throal.

In addition to those two were myself as well as Norg (a Troll who punches things VERY hard and can shrug off lightning bolts with ease, he said something about being called a Gauntlet), Rama (an Obsidiman Warrior, who has made his second appearance in my journal now - the previous time I had him down as Ram by accident, though), and Sandrin (an Elf Air Sailor, who also had a keen interest in the construction of new airships). I was somewhat worried about setting off into the mountains this close to winter, but thankfully I have some protective magic to help with that. The party decided that we were *probably* not all going to freeze to death (and if things got desperate I would've helped them anyways, although it's better to have warm clothes *and* protective magic than just protective magic).

We set out early into the mountains, with me riding point on Jolly Jumper. I spent most of the trip riding, in fact; it seems that while we didn't get cold, we got a lot of rain, but then, we were going in search of a True Air node, and if they were found in nice, warm, dry places I suppose we wouldn't need to go off looking for them, because we'd be living there. It didn't take too long before I spotted some disgusting bird-thing creatures coming to attack us. Fortunately, they were not terribly dangerous, just really gross. They flung disgusting things at us, and said the most horrid things, but in the end we were victorious although one of them escaped (it was very fast, or I'd have considered flying after it, even through the rain, since it isn't good for anyone to have such vile things about). The one that escaped seemed to be able to redirect lightning from the sky at us, which was not so good because I'm not overly fond of being electroctuted, but at least seemed to suggest we were headed the right way.

Shortly afterward we encountered a... pack? pride? flock? I'll go with group of those lightning huttawas we had heard about, so it turns out those are definitely real. They proved much more difficult to face, and had an unpleasant habit of electrocuting people who struck them. Either they couldn't do it against magic, or I just got lucky on that end of things; the Crow Spirits I Invoked blinded a couple, and one of them *really* suffered the wrath of the spirits, which makes sense as they're half cat, and they certainly seemed to enjoy trying to jump into the air to eat *me* at least. Lucky I'm a pretty slippery target, because the one time I got hit, it really hurt! I'm glad I didn't have to fly through the rain with that wound, but I do not recommend riding about with a hole ripped in you by such a large beak if you can help it. Fortunately Rama had learned something about treating wounds, and patched me up, which helped a lot. We also took a break to spend some time recovering, and eating magically heated food which really helped. Not quite as good as a Hero's Feast, but I get the impression our resident Elementalist was more focused on the node we were after than anything; perhaps a more attentive Elementalist could do better. Perhaps some day I shall test that theory myself.

In any event, we travelled a bit further and found a cave where some very frightened Dwarfs were hiding. They had been attacked by some Crystal Raiders while they were searching for the node themselves, on behalf of some company or other. Boardye or something like that? Anyways, I'm not impressed by that company, it seems they had the same idea of securing the node, minus the part where you send competent guards along with the noncombatants into the dangerous mountains full of creatures empowered by lightning. Such disregard for life does not bode well for any future dealings with their ilk. The poor fools who had been sent out without protection seemed to be decent folk, at least, and certainly I'm sure they would have preferred to have a few guards with them. After Rama took a look at their wounds, and a Hero's Feast from me (the spell, that is - I didn't cook it, although the food was quite excellent, much more spicey than Dwarf fare and deliciously prepared). One of them (Borgrim) seemed to have recovered well from his wounds, but his two associates looked much more injured. We agreed to take them back with us after we had gone about our business, got a good night of sleep and set out the next morning.

It turns out that the Crystal Raiders had also heard rumours about the possibility of a node here. They turned out to from a moot called the Broken Spears, and after our fight I wonder if they didn't get to choose that name so much as have it thrust upon them. Norg knew quite a bit about these Trolls it seemed, and concluded that their version of negotiating generally starts with a fight anyways, which loosely matches the stories I've heard. Sure enough, when we got there they immediately attacked us without seeming to be interested in negotiating at all, but seeing as how they outnumbered us I doubt we were going to secure the node for Throal by just asking even if we did try to negotiate by more conventional means.

So, Norg set about negotiating in a more traditional Crystal Raider manner; by walking right up to the biggest Troll still standing, and punching them in the face so hard that they could not form a coherent counter-argument. The rest of the Trolls tried to be scary, but it's hard to be scary for very long when someone is making such eloquent and persuasive arguments as Norg's fists. Sandrin and Rama, meanwhile, kept most of the rest of the Trolls busy so that Norg could deal with them one at a time, and I set about my usual habits of blinding opponents so that they can't hit the broad side of a barn, with a little bit of help from a Pack Tactics spell on the side. In the meanwhile, Dorsha was quite thoroughly upset by the incompetence of the Elementalist the Raiders had brought with them, and justly so since the node started blasting out lightning bolts all over the place before she got it under control. Fortunately, the most powerful initial blasts seemed to all go right to our opponents, and by the time our luck ran out the node was much less devastating. Norg took a couple of lightning bolts like it was nothing, although I suppose that's pretty standard for him.

At the end of it all, our opponents still had enough teeth left to be able pronounce the words "I surrender" clearly enough, so we took them prisoner and their moot ransomed them back. I imagine next time they see Norg they'll be more ready to try talking first. We made it back to Throal without incident, taking with us those unfortunate enough to be working for that miserable excuse for a company. Norg and Rama seemed insistent that they would be able to carry the injured... personally, I volunteered the services of Jolly Jumper, who does not usually have to carry much these days, but they really seemed to want to lift things to show how strong they are. It seemed a bit silly to me, but I suppose I might want to show how strong I was if I was the size of a small tree too.

From the Journal of Rama, Obsidiman warrior

I learned of two Adepts, Helga Brightmore and Dorsha Mennanir, an Orc Air Sailor and Dwarven Elementalist, who needed aid for an upcoming expedition. They intended to travel deeper into the Throal mountains to investigate rumors of a node of True Air that was affecting local wildlife that could possibly be repurposed for the benefit of the Namegivers that dwell in and around Throal.

I willingly lent my arms to this task along with Sandrin, an Elven Swordmaster; Zivlyn, a Windling Shaman and Norg, a Troll Gauntlet. Of the three, I have traveled with Zivlyn before and know him to be a trustworthy companion. Norg and his style of combat are new to me and I would become quite impressed with his abilities during this journey.

I found deep joy in traveling the mountain roads as we wound through canyons that had not known the trod of Namegivers since the Scourge darkened these lands The stones sung to me deep and low and I listened as I walked, content to be among the memory of the elders and their deep sense of patience and calm, what my people Name as Oomgonnogroth.

Storms and rain followed us on the first day of our walk. I am not troubled by being wet but I was concerned for my companions, but all seemed to have taken the appropriate precautions for comfort during travel.

Our first brush with conflict was with creatures known as Harpies. These malignant and twisted beings were full of rage and malice as three of them descended from the skies to harry us. One of them showered me with its filth and the leader of this brood seemed to be aligned with the storm itself.

The battle was quick. Sandrin managed to clip the wings of one of the beasts which the party quickly subdued. The second fell in short order and the leader quickly fled back into the storm. I at first believed Zivlyn would give chase, but the storm and the rain deterred him. I believe that was the wisest choice. Even though these beings were foul and had attacked us, I could not bring myself to hate them. The Scourge has left its mark upon all of us - some more than others. Hate is not a proper reaction to such suffering, only mercy.

Shortly after our battle with the Harpies, several huttawas, the creatures the Dwarves often use as beasts of burden or mounts, attempted to ambush us from the top of rock formations as we walked below. They seemed especially interested in our Windling companion. I cannot imagine the primal terror Zivlyn must have faced as the huttawas pounced again and again attempting to tear him from the sky.

These beings had indeed been affected by the Node we sought. Their very bodies had become electrified and striking them resulted in damaging feedback. The battle was dangerous and difficult with the agile cat-lizards making easy use of the terrain. One of them finally got a lucky strike on Zivlyn though the Windling was able to roll to some safety rather than end up pinned under the creature’s claws.

I rushed to his aid and was able to help subdue the beast before it could do further harm. Norg impressively leapt up a cliff face to engage the huttawa, bringing it down with a mighty blow before the last fled in search of easier prey.

Hurt and in search of shelter, we moved down the pass only to discover what remained of a group of surveyors from the Borodai Mining Company. The leader of the expedition, Borgrim Quen and two of his crew were all that was left from their party. Borgrim explained they had fallen afoul of a band of Troll Crystal Raiders while searching for the Node.

All of the Dwarves sustained injuries, one more grievous than the others; Skomund Bronzebraid had a shattered leg and lay comatose on a makeshift cot. I set about attempting to heal their hurts as best I could with the limited means I had at hand. Once the immediate dangers were attended, I began to prepare our evening meal with the spices I had obtained from the T’Skrang traders in Bartertown the previous week. Garlen blessed my hands and the food I had available and the result was far better than I expected. Zivlyn was able to augment my meal with his magical abilities and I was relieved to see Borgrim and Eribelle Hrundson, the Dwarf with the lightest wounds, make a solid recovery. Skomund continued to languish and during the night developed a fever. I began to worry about corruption setting into his wounds.

When day broke, we discovered we were merely hours from the location of the Node and decided to press on, telling the Dwarves to stay in place and that we would return for them as soon as we had dealt with the Node. I bid them a reluctant farewell especially considering the condition of Skomund but our goal was best served by moving forward.

After travelling some distance down a winding canyon, the sounds of Trollish reached our ears. Here, Norg proved invaluable. He was able to determine these Trolls were of the Broken Spear tribe and gave us valuable information. We now knew there would be no hope of claiming the Node without a fight.

The Node itself lay on a shelf-like cliff edge, in a shallow depression, surrounded by columns of rock. It took the appearance of a ball of lightning, pulsing and crackling with pure elemental energy. Cold winds scourced the cliff face to our south and the view from the edge to the north was staggering. The shelf was several yards deep before abutting into the face and a large group of Trolls had taken up residence.

Our appearance as we slipped out of the western canyon was met with a challenging roar from the Trolls and battle was joined.

I have walked these lands long before the Long Dark, the Shalacomtalivallitallinalinal, closed off the world, but never had I heard such passion put into sound by a Namegiver like these Trolls could shout. Their voices echoed from the stone and the sheer volume of their voices made me hesitate. One of them nearly struck me with a thrown spear that clattered near my feet. Sandrin, our Swordmaster, was apparently not impressed by the clamour and in a stunning display of Elven alacrity slid between my legs, retrieved the fallen spear and in one swift motion threw it back at the Troll, causing her to stagger.

While our battle was joined, I heard Dorsha shouting and lifted my head to see a struggle begin between our Elementalist and the Troll Elementalist who was struggling to gain control over the Node. Though I couldn’t make out all of the words over the shouting and the wind, Dorsha was attempting to warn the Troll of some error he was making. Suddenly, a bolt of white-hot lighting lept from the Node, striking down a Troll and rendering him to ash in a heartbeat.

With the Node arcing out of control, the fight on the ledge picked up in intensity. To my left, I saw Norg stride forward and fell a Crystal Raider with one blow from his right hand. Whatever his training, whatever Passion walked with him during that battle, he was a force to be feared. Downing a Troll, let alone a hardened Crystal Raider, with one blow from an empty hand is a feat very few can boast of.

Sandrin continued to be a blur of activity, harrying the trolls and providing openings for attacks while Zivlyn called out to the Spirits, filling us with the fury of Wolves and bringing the wrath of ravens down on our opponents. Norg was struck twice by the Node but showed no signs of slowing.

We pressed our advantage and rather than face death, the Trolls surrendered. Dorsha was able to claim and calm the Node of True Air. We took the Trolls prisoner, understanding that they would be ransomed back as was the custom of their people. We returned to find Borogrim and company awaiting us and their relief was a joy to behold.

Borogrim surprised me with a display of honest emotion and tears. I have often puzzled at my fellow Namegivers and how they strive against their emotions, believing them as something they must control or oppose. While I also understand the danger of giving in to destructive impulses, I have never grasped the embarrassment some feel when showing their own sadness or joy - anything that brings tears. Borogrim honored me and I joined him, as best I could, in the Melding and sharing of this moment. Perhaps this is just another part of how other Namegivers live more quickly than we do or how they cannot even fully participate in a Melding. I do not find it a weakness or find our own way superior - they are simply differences which I find it hard to understand.

We were able to set up litters for Skomund and descened the rest of the way back into Throal. I escorted Skomund to the Halls of Garlen and am pleased to report he is making a full recovery.

LFG
AAR

Rumor: Beastmasters in Throal are gossipping about lightning Huttawas in the mountains. Elementalists suspect there is an Air node in play. Helga Brightmore and Dorsha Mennanir (and other parties interested in building airships) want to check the area for True Elemental Air.

Sandrin: Elf Air Sailor
Zivilyn: Windling Shaman
Norg: Troll Gauntlet
Rama: Obsidiman Warrior

Sandrin rounds up the others and meets with Helga and Dorsha for last-minute preparations. Our job is to scout the paths ahead while Dorsha senses for the source of the node. Helga will defend Dorsha personally.

While Zivilyn keeps a lookout, Sandrin navigates our up the mountains. Norg sees to the goats and supplies.

Day 1:
It’s very rainy on our way up the mountain, but the first day passes uneventfully. Zivilyn keeps casting Weather Cloak on himself to protect his wings.

Day 2:
We find an eroded path that used to be well worn from foot traffic. In the grey skies, we see something flying, possibly birds of prey. Soon we realize they actually have humanoid bodies. As they descend, we hear them cackling. One larger one is glowing with lightning. Norg and Rama activate their Wood Skin Talents.

Rama readies himself against their imminent attack.
Harpy 1 insults Rama then hits him soundly.
Sandrin runs up and stabs the Harpy.
The glowing Harpy channels lightning down upon Rama, and it jumps to Sandrin as well.
Harpy 2 descends and insults Sandrin, but fails to connect with its club.
Zivilyn casts crows at one of the Harpies, but fails to affect it.
Norg runs around to attack the first Harpy.

Sandrin takes out one Harpy’s wings.
The glowing Harpy swoops down on Norg with minimal effect.
Harpy 1 misses Zivilyn.
Rama swings around and bisects Harpy 1 for attacking Zivilyn.
Zivilyn casts Crows at Harpy 2, murdering her.

The Glowing Harpy calls down more lighting, failing to connect. She then circles away up into the sky.

We continue onward up the mountain. Our surroundings become more jagged rock outcroppings. Zivilyn spots motion on the rocks above us, and flies up to take a look. He finds some of the lightning Huttawas that we’d heard about.

One leaps at Zivilyn in midair, but misses, landing near the rest of us.
Zivilin casts Crows at it in return, hurting and blinding it.
Sandrin distracts the one on the ground and throws a dagger at another one on the rocks. An arc of lightning strikes back at Sandrin, knocking him down.
Norg hits the one on the ground, wounding it, but shocked by lightning as well.
Rama tries to stun the one on the ground and is not shocked by lightning.

Huttawa 3 tries to grab Zivilyn out of the air, and also fails.
Huttawa 4 drops on Sandrin and takes a bite.
Sandrin stands up and Distracts Huttawa 4, then backs away from it.
Rama moves to Huttawa 3 and knocks it down.
Norg moves up to 4, and crushes it, taking some lightning in the process.
Zivilyn casts crows at 3, killing it.
Huttawa 2 nabs Zivilyn, bringing him down to the ground.

Rama attacks Huttawa 2 on the ground, wounding it.
Sandrin jumps up and throws another dagger, hitting, and gets shocked again. However, the Huttawa bounds away to escape.
Norg climbs up the mountain to attack Huttawa 2, wounding it.

Huttawa 2 misses Norg.
Rama climbs up and threatens the last Huttawa.
Norg kicks it down the mountain to its death.

We check on Dorsha, she’s focusing on a diving rod to find the node. She fixes us a heated lunch and we take 2 hours to recover. We then continue up the mountain for another hour. Dorscha keeps nudging us in the right direction. We see some shallow caves between jutting rocks. A crossbow bolt shoots out of one of those caves, with a shout of “Get away!” A bedraggled dwarf, Balthrim, is part of a survey for the Bolredai Mining Company. They’re after the True Air node as well. His survey team was jumped by some Crystal Raiders, and two of his friends were badly injured in the fight. Two other Dwarfs are inside the cave, a man and a woman. We spend the night and Rama treats their injuries. We enjoy a Heroes Feast from Zivilyn, sharing stories of battles gone by. The dwarves pass out immediately afterward. We keep watch, but nothing occurs. There is some howling answering the lightning.

Day 3:
The next morning we prepare ourselves and set out. One of the dwarfs is now running a fever, so they’ll wait for us to return and bring them home. Rama comforts the Balthrim before we leave. We continue up, winding our way around the mountainside. We hear the noise of the node and loud troll speech and prepare ourselves. As we round the corner, we hear a lot of murmuring and chanting.

Norg believes they’re part of the Broken Spear Moot nearby. Dorscha doesn’t like what she sees and runs to the other side of the Node to counter what their caster is doing, Helga moves to defend her.

A Troll throws a spear, missing Rama.
Sandrin runs by, scoops up the spear, and hits the troll archer in the back with it. Sandrin then insults the original thrower.
Two trolls flank Sandrin. Their elite warrior intimidates Sandrin with a shout but fails to hit the nimble elf twice. The other troll comes up behind Sandrin and still misses.
Norg kills the elite warrior with a single punch.
The node shoots out lightning, killing two of the trolls.

Sandrin runs through the fight to charge the archer, and puts a dagger into him. The proceeds to dodge insults and arrows.
Zivilyn casts Pack Tactics on Norg and Rama to kill Raider 2.
The node sends out lightning at Sandrin, but it slides off of him.

Zivilyn and Rama chase down the running archer, while Norg and Sandrin surround the last troll raider. The node strikes at Norg, but he is unharmed.

The trolls surrender as Dorsha diffuses the storm node plasma ball into nothingness. We allow them to live and promise to ransom them back to their moot. We head back, picking up the dwarves on the way.

The journey back to Throal is uneventful.

Dorsha is able to bring enough True Air kernels back to encourage the merchants to reward us with some enchanted items. After celebrations at the taverns with my fellow sailors, I put the finishing touches on my map of the route to the node.

From "Notes on the world outside the kaers" as penned by Norg

There's been rumours of "storm huttawas" in the mountains which had beastmasters all a titter with excitement for a while, but turns out that elementalists think it is a sign of the presence of a source of true air, which has the shipwrights positively drooling. So it was that an ork Air Sailor named Helga Brightmore and a dwarf Elementalist named Dorsha Mennanir were looking for an escort up the mountains to investigate.

I joined three relatively new adepts I'd never met before: Sandrin an elf Air Sailor, Rama an obsidiman Warrior (I appreciate that he didn't require us to use his full name unlike some other obsidiman I could name), and Zivilyn a windling Shaman for what I naively expected to be a quiet hike under the open sky, a nice change of pace after the Blood Bees, with no dark and cramped tunnels full of incessant buzzing and most importantly no horrors behind the scenes. I was mostly right even...

What I'd forgotten is that it's still winter, and apparently the incessant raining was not just a thing that happened last year... the next 2 days were a dreary slog in the cold and wet. I found myself missing Dvarim and his knack for making good shelter out of anything at hand, but at least Dorsha was willing to offer air mattresses and hot food for everyone.

Master would probably have described this as a great opportunity for self improvement, but I note that the old (and I mean old for an obsidiman) fart was staying nice an cosy in his home not pulling wet snow out of his boots with me, so I was quite happy to partake in all the available comforts in the name of "only using my strength when absolutely necessary".

Sandrin ably guided us up the mountains following Dorsha's hints based on waving a tuning fork around, Zivilyn kept an eye out for threats and I, as usual, went about the business of keeping us fed.

The first day went by soggily and the second was playing out as an identical reprise, when Zivilyn spotted some harpies? I'll call them harpies since none of the people that usually tell me what things are were around. The harpies were circling in the sky above us and started dropping as Zivilyn pointed them out. The first one to get close flung some filth from it's body at Rama, I guess they have something in common with monkeys or maybe pigeons? I also really hope that wasn't actually poop. The fight was brief and not particularly challenging, however one of the harpies showed signs of what I would describe as storm infusion, reminiscent of the mutations in Ironbark Grove.

A short while later, as we were walking through a gorge, several huttawas showed up, also showing the effects of elemental infusion, once again Zivilyn's sharp eyes saved us from an ambush, however I worry about the little guy's willingness to fly in the rain. I heard it's really dangerous for their wings. The fight against the huttawas was more challenging, as hitting them would cause electrical backlash which Sandrin discovered to his shock. Once he was on the ground, the some of the huttawas classified his as "snack" and tried to rip him apart. As the highest circle adept in the group, other than our employers who were staying out of the fight, I felt responsible for the others so I waded in to protect the Air Sailor. The rest of the fight was fairly brutal, with huttawas constantly trying to snatch Zivilyn out of the air and eventually succeeding, me and Rama trying to keep them focuses on, and general chaos.

Eventually we gained the upper hand and the huttawas started retreating, Zivilyn murdered one with spirit crows, I chased another up the side of the gorge and punted it in the opposite wall and the fight was over. Overall the greatest danger when facing storm huttawas seems to be in the electrical backlash. I also discovered that an adult troll hand can fit down an huttawa's mouth and the heart can be extracted this way, I would not advise trying this maneuver intentionally as the electrical backlash inside may be even stronger.

Towards the end of the day, we reached an area full of cave or cave like formations, when suddenly a crossbow bolt missed us. Turns out we'd found the remains of another expedition looking for our prize. They were three dwarves from some mining company in Throal, and two were severely injured in a crystal raider attack. Rama took a look at their wound and offered what help he could. Zivilyn did something with dinner, most excellently cooked by Rama, which seemed to help the wounded.

The next day we figure were were only a few hours away from the elemental node so we promised the dwarves we'd escort them to Throal on the way back. We kept climbing higher into the mountains until we heard some voices speaking in trollish ahead. Catching bits and pieces I figured they were crystal raiders of the Broken Spear moot, here to claim the true air for themselves. Thinking back to the stories I heard, I told the others that we could attempt diplomacy, but crystal raider diplomacy involves beating your interlocutor into submission.

We approached the crystal raiders fully prepared for a heated "discussion" when Dorsha noticed that they had an elementalist fiddling with the air node, screamed something about fools and rushed in. Helga rushed in to incercept one of the raiders that was moving towards Dorsha, leaving us to deal with the remaining half a dozen raiders.

Their opening arguments were fairly weak, a thrown spear that fell well short of Rama and some flailing at Sandrin. My rebuttal was from the fist to the face school of oratory and dropped the biggest and meanest one on the first try. After that they quickly yielded to our superior arguments with no actual casualties, probably a first in crystal raider diplomacy. Interspersed with the arguments were lightning strikes apparently caused by the manipulations of the elemental node. The first two struck down two of the crystal raiders but the next two homed in on me, maybe because I was the only one in metal armour, the first narrowly missed me while the second struck but to be honest was more of a tickle.

The crystal raiders agreed to be taken prisoner for ransoming, Dorsha brought the elemental node back under control, and we prepared for the journey back. Standing there on the cliff top, looking at Barsaive spread below me, after engaging in the most stereotypical of trollish activities, I felt something stir in my heart, the call of the sky and the way of the raiders? Rama's deliciously spicy breakfast? Only time would tell...

As promised on the way back we picked up the surveyors, who were extremely grateful for the help. One of them still had a broken leg so Rama and I took turns carrying the makeshift stretcher.
