After the first couple of days I started to make house calls to the outskirts of town as most of the physicians in town weren't comfortable with traveling on their own. During this time I was often approached to assist with some small task for the town. It's now almost two weeks after the attack and I have been approached to investigate several possible issues along the Coil river, a bridge repair crew has gone missing, rumors of survivors along the river banks and finally some scavengers collecting debris to sell on the black market.
I reached out to several of my friends to assist me, Barag, Turk, Strats and Calina all agreed to assist my investigations. Some more willing than others. After meeting at a local tavern to discuss the tasks we decided to head to the bridge and figure out what happened to the repair crew. Well I must say the last thing I expected was to come across the repair crew playing cards and relaxing several miles from the bridge. Apparently the area around the bridge is too cold for them to work. It's a typically warm day so I don't understand why they can't be working on the bridge.
Once we get closer to the bridge I now understand the issue as the weather drastically changes from our typical warm weather to snow and freezing temperatures in the span of a couple of feet. Something magical is effecting the weather. Barag doesn't know what could be causing it so we have to head into the cold to investigate. Barag and Turk have cold weather gear while Calina looks very upset about the cold. I offer her my cloak to help her with the cold. My mother drilling good manners into me during my childhood is coming to good effect.
Once we approach the bridge we notice a huge stone has smashed the bridge and about a dozen flying monkeys on the bridge. We stay a distance from the bridge as we analyze what is going on. Barag suggests that the stone feel from the flying citadel and that the true air in the stone is reacting to the river, thus causing the change in temperature. The rest of us discuss using our rope and chains from our climbing gear to drag the stone out of the river. While we are discussing this the monkeys were having a fight for dominance and one group has left. The remaining monkeys seem to be settling into their new turf.
Strats starts to walk towards the monkeys and offers them a peace offering of an apple while Turk fly's our rope out towards the rock to lasso the rock. While this is going on the monkeys start a yelling contest with Strats for some reason or another. Then I hear a faint whisper which causes me to spin around but I don't see anything other than Calina standing beside me. I guess the cold is getting to me. Then Calina leans in and asks me what I know about these flying monkeys and do I think they have magical abilities. Calina was talking...to me...she was talking...I didn't think she could talk, at no point has anyone indicated that she could talk and we have spent several days together during our various adventures and now today she can talk.
During my moment of stunned confusion the monkeys have had enough of Strats and start to attack him. I must say it was amusing to watch them flay away at him. With quick work from my axe, Turk's sword and Strats fists the monkeys decide that this new frozen bridge isn't worth it. But before they leave one of them throws some ice at me which wraps around me and restricts my movement. I try to free myself but at first I was unable to free myself. Calina reaches over and lightly touches my cheek and the ice melts away. I don't think cast a spell but whatever I'm thankful to be free.
We quickly drag the stone from the river once we realize that the true air makes for a very light boulder. We carry the stone back to town passing the bridge crew letting them know that they can now start to work.
After spending the night in town and a warm bed we continue down the river searching for any survivors. We come across a battle and some bodies on our way to the river's edge. Once there we find a band of survivors who are stranded on an island in the river. Turk fly's over to provide the injured and malnourished with food and medical aid. The rest of us start to figure out the best way to get the survivors to shore. During the rescue Turk notices something entering the water from the other bank.
The T'Skrang start talking about Chengoro Shivoam a huge river crocodile that the T'Skrang revere. We gather along the shore waiting to see what Chengoro will do. Well she decides to take a bite of Strats leg and attempt to drag him into the river. Strats stands his ground and we all start to beat on Chengoro and we eventually knock her unconscious. We then take that opportunity to escort the survivors back to town.
Once back in town we are praised as heroes and everyone wants to buy us dinner and a drink. Turk has more food in front of him than he weighs in short order. Calina turns down the townsfolks hospitality, what is her story? She seems very well mannered but why has she spent all of this time not talking to just start talking to me earlier. Very curious.
The next day we take some time looking at the map to figure out where these scavengers might be located. We pick some likely spots for them to be and head off. Eventually we come across a boat and a small campfire with some items dragged from the river. Seems like we might of found our scavengers.
We approach cautiously but we don't notice anyone and Turk fly's ahead to see if he can find anyone. After a couple of minutes Barag shouts out that we were going to burn their boat. Well they must of really liked that boat as all of a sudden a female T'Skrang appeared behind me and stabbed poor Calina in the back. Two more T'Skrang jump out of the forest and two dwarves appeared as well. The dwarves fired arrows at myself and Barag. I took a minor wound but Barag and Calina have taken some serious injuries from the ambush. Strats charges the female T'Skrang and pummels her with his fists.
After taking a look at poor Calina, I charge the two male T'Skrang hoping that Strats will deal with the female. Turk is maneuvering behind the two archers. The two I charged flank and attack me while the female takes a look at Strats and flees. Apparently stabbing an elven female in the back is as much courage as she can handle. The two archers continue to attack Barag and Calina. They both take another injury. Strats charges the T'Skrang behind me and caves in his skull.
I continue to attack the T'Skrang in front of me as Turk attacks one of the archers from behind while Calina and Barag take cover. At this point the remaining three scavengers either flee or surrender. Luckily neither Barag or Calina die during this ambush.
We return to Kampung Gaja with the missing items and prisoner. The townsfolk are very happy with all that we managed to accomplish during the last couple of days. Now that we are all back in town my questions about Calina only intensify. Why doesn't she talk? Why did she talk to me? What is her story? I think I will send her a letter to get these answers.
I'm going to spend some more time here in Kampung Gaja maybe even a couple of months as the people here will need my help more than the people in Thoral will.

In the aftermath of the attack on Kampung Gaja, my friend R’edtarian the human warrior asked myself and several companions to provide some adept assistance. We were joined by Barag the dwarven elementalist, Calina the elven wizard and Truck the windling warrior.
He had identified three areas where we could help ease things for the survivors.
- Survivors trying to locate and gather up what worldly goods could be salvaged were finding that looters had been there before them, taking everything.
- A team of bridge repairmen was missing / overdue.
- Scattered refugees were apparently still out in the wilderness after fleeing the attack; some of them were ill suited to roughing it and were thought to be in trouble.
We traveled to where the bridge was to be repaired and found the bridge crew about a half day’s journey this side of the bridge. They described a strange cold area that was freezing the bridge and the area around it. They were in no danger, just delayed, as they waited out the inclement weather. Barag said the elements were all out of balance on the river and we decided it would be prudent to investigate rather than just wait to see if it cleared on its own.
Arriving at the bridge, we discovered a large boulder of air-infused stone from the airship that had attacked Kampung Gaja. The boulder had fallen and taken out part of the bridge. Veins of True Air were mixing with True Water in the river and causing the freezing effect. The cold area had attracted several packs of Ice Flyers (frozen flying baboons). In order for the repair crew to do their work safely, we would need to remove the boulder that was the root of the problem and get the Ice Fliers to leave.
We watched the Ice Fliers for a while, and determined that there were two packs fighting to be “King of the Ice Boulder”. We let them howl at each other til one pack won and the other left the area, flying toward the Throal mountains.
I moved forward to draw the attention of the remaining Ice Fliers while the others attempted to remove the boulder. While I was successful in the distraction for a short while, eventually the Ice Fliers caught on and attacked. I punched them.
We discovered the boulder still retained some of its flying enchantment and carried the huge thing back to Kampung Gaja. The image of the windling towing the huge boulder was quite amusing and seemed to lift morale in the recovering city. The bridge crew began repairs and is expected to complete the work soon.
Next we tracked a large group of refugees to where they had taken refuge with their wounded on an island in the river. Their leader was the t’skrang elder El’laj Nokku Galah. Truck spotted a large underwater predator coming towards us as we ferried the wounded back to shore, so that we could guard them on a return trip to the city.
Chengoro Shivoam turned out to be a giant, ancient crocodile. It attempted to eat my leg. I punched it. I was gentle tho since the refugees said it was a sacred animal (the River’s Grand-daughter). After we knocked it unconscious, we marked the area as one to be cautious of on our maps and helped the refugees get back.
Lastly, we followed reports about where the looters had been active. We found their camp. There were curtains. Barag taunted them about breaking their boat to get them to come out of hiding. We got the arrows out of Barag after I punched them. The river pirate leader, Naboz the t’skrang, came out of hiding and sliced Calina open. I punched him. He ran away. One of the dwarf pirates surrendered. I stopped punching him. We brought him back to town.

And El’laj Nokku Gajah and her refugees were rescued without killing Chengoro, the great crocodile they call 'granddaughter of the Serpent'.

Chapter 109: Respect and Regret
I do not know how I got roped into this adventure. I was fulfilling my duties as a claims adjustor for the homes that were destroyed in Kampung Gaja. It took the recommendation of a very powerful person to get me that job. One of the head scribes had offered it to me to get me out of the Great Library every now and then. It seemed like employment I could accel at, but apparently dishonesty was more important than accurate evaluations of the rebuild cost. My manager met me on site and told me to pack up and leave the site. That is where I was roped up by a group of fans celebrating the arrival of a group of Adepts. Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth, R'edtarian, and Barag were amongst those I recognized. There was also a windling named Truck. I thought it was odd that so many people were watching me while I worked. I knew Adepts were a big deal in Throal, but I had not realized they were just as celebrated in the lower circles.
We set out along one of the many paths that spread from Kampung Gaja. I had no idea what we were looking for, but we soon found a bizarre weather phenomenon, one where it was cold and snowing. It was strange; the icy temperatures reached even into astral space. I did not really want to go where the temperature was too cold for my attire, but I was dragged along anyway. Many thanks to R'edtarian, who lent me his cloak. Come to think of it, I need to return it to him. I always thought of him as an honest human. He seems very trustworthy. Hopefully with time, he does not betray that image. Anyway, he was a focal point for my Mage Armor. I also slung it on Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth, who does not really seem to ever need any extra protection. When we found the cause of the strange meteorological anomaly, there were two troupes of winged monkeys flying overhead, each vying for dominance. Barag believed the source to be a large chunk of stone fused with true air in the river. He also believe removing it from the river would correct the weather to appropriate temperatures. As we devised a method to remove the rock, the flying primates had resolved who was dominant and landed near the stone on a bridge. Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth elected to grab their attention so that Truck could attach a chain to the boulder. Commendable, even as he entered a shouting contest with one of the primates. This, of course, began a hostile encounter, during which I did what I could to improve our team's defenses against magical attacks. I was not sure these things could perform any form of magic. Inquiring to R'edtarian about them gave little more insight to their abilities. I am glad I decided to go with an Astral Shield rather than an Iron Hand spell. It did not seem to do too much to assist the team, but we came out relatively unscathed.
We continued along our path to find a specific person. We found him dead, but not far from his body was an island separated by a branch of the Coil. There were T'Skrang on the island, who seemed to have been separated from society far too long. Truck began taking food and medical supplies to them as the rest of the team devised ways to get them off the island. The best I could do was give them better mobility to escape the island quicker. They began talking about Chengoro Shivoam. Translated from T'Skrang, it referred to a large granddaughter of the river or some such. Either way, killing it was not an option. I tied it down with Binding Threads as Barag wrapped it up with his Ice Mace and Chain spell. It was ultimately R'edtarian who knocked it unconscious. As the giant Crocodile like beast fell in the mud, a massive wave was launched over Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth. There was no escaping it, I just let it wash over me. Good thing we were by a river. As the rest of the team continued assisting the T'Skrang, I took a swim to try to get as much mud out of my clothes as possible. It could have been worse. If it had any sufficient mass, it would have knocked me over and both sides of my clothes would have been muddied.
Once we returned, there were many T'Skrang celebrating our Adept status and what we had just accomplished. They treated us to drink and nourishment. Poor Truck had enough food to weigh twice what he did. I just handed him a napkin, but I do not think anyone understood it as a joke. I shall have to work on that. The fans were constantly offering me drink, but most walked away only mildly upset that I rejected their offers. A few also asked for stories, but they did not understand sign language. Soon the fans were ignoring me completely. They probably thought I was being rude. Maybe they do not understand how nobility works? I mean, I am no longer a noble, but I cannot just shirk my family traditions just because I was removed from House Ravanqnerosicor, can I?
With our beds provided by the masses, we woke the next day to track down a threat to the salvage teams. We began at the beach. I just kind of followed Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth and R'edtarian. It took a bit of searching, but we did eventually find a camp. There were an extraordinary set of cloth curtains. I would likely be able to repurpose it into a new set of clothes. Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth investigated the campsite, and Truck was scouting the other side of the site. Barag was far behind R'edtarian and me. From the safety of his distance (which turned out to be less safe than originally anticipated), he called out a far reaching implication that we would burn the curtains and everything else. A set of eyes appeared next to me, then jumped out to stab me. Everything was in slow motion. The blade plunging underneath my ribs, a tail blade diving into my chest as the first blade was hidden, an arrow flying through the air towards me as Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth rushed to assault my assassin. R'edtarian immediately moved towards the archer's direction. As he kicked up the dirt beneath his boots, my sight followed it to watch the T'Skrang assassin bolt towards the river, turning about with his or her tail following like a ribbon. The arrow hit me in the chest, and I rolled over to get off the ground. I clutched at my wounds as I ran for cover in a complete panic. I do not know how these Adepts do it. I did not know where anyone was. We were facing fatal opposition. They each stepped up to fight back. Barag included. It was inspirational, but I did not step out from the safety of cover until it was over. A dwarf had surrendered, and a second T'Skrang was running away. I had barely scraped together enough threads for a spell.
I survived. Somehow, I lived through several severe wounds. My clothes were shreds and covered in blood, but I was alive! I think I might just save this outfit. When I have enough money for my own place, I shall mount them or frame them somewhere. For now, I shall enjoy some rest and relaxation.
On the way back, I went to visit my daughter in Trayckid. She is an absolutely horrible physician, but she adopted an elf child. Silly name, Orfen. I recall Vralino having a better imagination, but I suppose she only wasted it on mischievous shenanigans. She has done well for herself, taking on the responsibilities of both an orphanage and an infirmary. Strangest thing, my adopted granddaughter was quite handy with medical devices. She did an amazing job patching me up.
When I returned to Throal, Barag was awaiting me with a peculiar item, an armband. He asked me to do some research on it. I happily spent the next week in the safety of the Great Library. I found the research quite relaxing. Before I knew it, I had about 387 pages worth of notes on it. As I typically do, I wrote them in as many languages as I knew, just to make sure he understood what he asked me to research. I had the scribes bind it, but a couple books were necessary to contain the entirety of my notes. I hope it answers all his questions about the item. In truth, I completely forgot what I was supposed to discover about the item, so I just concatenated all the information I had on it. I did forget to collect payment for my work. He had to seek me out to pay for it. Quite the respectable dwarf, but there are plenty of noble dwarves, so it is no surprise that an Elementalist followed their virtues.
In the midst of my research, Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth also made an appearance. When I had finished with the armband, the scribes informed me of his arrival and how he was simply standing at the entrance. They were not sure if he was catatonic or just exceptionally polite. Clearly they hadn't come across many Obsidimen in the Library, which isn't to be expected. Obsidimen are well known for their brutish capabilities. He had this peculiar set of armor, exceptionally heavy, and made from a beautiful slab of marble with golden flecks and crystals embedded in almost a vein like pattern. Along with this armor was a netting. The gossamer was exceptionally fine, and there was a pattern on it where crystals were attached using gold threading. I am glad he did not just leave it at the door. I do not know if I could ever move the armor, let alone lift it to where I conduct my research. I thought the stair might break beneath the weight of Stratavaraprolagrahayopristanockahgannagroth and his armor, but aside from a loud and disconcerting creaking with each step, the stairs suffered no damage. This was a slightly different request, as he asked me to not only research some information, but also to study the true pattern of these items as well. He never left my side as I completed book after book, and he even went searching for a few volumes I wanted to dive into as well, not that it helped that much. He moves very slowly when not engaged in a brawl, like he has so much time on this world that he has no need to rush anywhere. It was almost as if he was enjoying every step as he travelled from one place to the next, truly never taking a single step for granite (I made another funny!). Anyway, he followed me home, followed me to the diners, followed me back to the Great Library, almost followed me into the bathroom. It was fun having a giant stone-like bodyguard for a couple weeks, but it had to end eventually. When I finished up the research, I had a scribe bind the pages in a manual, same as for Barag. This time, I wrote it all in Obsidiman and Throalic, so it only went to 284 pages. I gave him the books, he picked up the manual, and went about his business. As I was about to leave the Great Library, one of the scribes came up to me with a massive bag of silver coins. Apparently this was my payment for my time. I couldn't carry it home, much less safeguard it, so I just donated most of it to the Great Library, keeping what little I could carry with me.
I decided to offer my services to other lower circle Adepts. Even I could not sabotage self employment in a field where speech is only minutely a requirement, right? Maybe, eventually, I could afford a home that I did not have to share with others. I could start leaving things in a secure place while I am away from Throal! Where should I reside? I do not wish to be close to House Ravanqnerosicor any longer. Maybe I could find residence in Kampung Gaja? Better yet, I have heard about the Floating City over Lake Ban. It is significantly closer to Vorst. That is a bit of a trip, though. I shall begin saving immediately. For now, the flop house will suffice.

I got word that they needed help cleaning up Kampung Gajah after the attack a while ago. Several of us traveled down from Throal to help out. When we arrived we were informed that there were several very important tasks that needed to be done urgently.

They figured it would thaw out eventually, and were waiting for that. We advanced and found that there was some sort of elemental effect affecting a very large area, it was freezing cold. I had winter gear so the cold did not bother me very much, but some of my companions did not, and suffered from the cold. We saw that a huge stone seems to have fallen from the sky, broke a bit from the bridge, and stuck in the shallow river. We speculated that the rock was part of the lifting area of the flying citadel that was shot down, We could see that the stone was imbued with much True Air, and that the True Air was interacting with the water (the river was known to occasionally generate pockets of True Water) to produce extreme cold. We figured we needed to get the rock out of the river. We speculated that since it was so imbued with True Air, it might still be able to float.
There were about a dozen Ice Flyers about, but they seemed to be from two separate tribes, and eventually one of the tribes drove the other away, leaving only 6, one wounded. We drove the Ice Flyers away (killing two), and then attached some pitons to the rock and hauled it out of the river. We took it back to Kampung Gajah where we made an impressive display carrying this huge rock. Once the rock was out of the river the cold snap ended and the bridge repair crew were able to start work on the bridge.
Before and during the attack on the Nail, many residents fled, and some had not returned. We went searching for them and found some wounded and hungry, stranded on an island. I did much physicaining, and we helped them get off the island. During which time a huge crocodial attacked. They called it Chingoro shivilan - grandaughter of the serpent river. We beat it into unconsciousness and the T'Skrang were able to get off the island in safety and we helped them back to town.
During the attack, a great deal of the Nails goods had been swept downstream (the Nail is mostly constructed in the water, and when dwellings are damaged, the contents tends to float away). A salvage party had gone downstream looking for those goods, but encountered some bandits who were also collecting these goods, who ran them off. We went downstream, found the bandit camp and attempted to talk to them, but they attacked us (two of us were almost killed), so we ended up dealing quite firmly with them.
After several days of doing odd jobs like these the town was much restored.
