A carnival had arrived in Throal about a week earlier, Named Phaelon’s Festival of Wonders. They had come all the way from Travar. Word was spreading through town about how exciting their stage production, “The Trials of Irilis” was. So, on the last night of their stay, my friends — Jarock, Lazluin, Mal, and Nib — went to the show.

Arriving at the festival — situated just west of Throal — a cryer was announcing that Onyx the Destroyer, the odds on favorite to win the next Founder’s Tournament was here, too. Incredible! In fact, Onyx was standing by the ticket booth, resplendent with a crystal shield. The old woman at the booth told us we had the choice of ground seats (5 sp) or flying carpet seats (20 sp). Incredible! I was eager to try the flying carpets, but my friends were more frugal, so we all sat together in ground seats. Of course, the usher was sound asleep, slumped over in a corner. But we found the seats anyway.

The play was spectacular. At least at the start. It told the tale of the last of Travar before it closed for the Scourge. Large amounts of illusionist magic and other abilities made the spectacle seem real. People running for their lives. Bear-sized creatures barring the way and attacking. Huge magical hands sprouting up out of the earth. A raised platform above, where robed figures and a figure with metallic wings directed the battles that raged. Eventually a magical glowing done sealed the city, while airships and Theran vedettes burned outside. Truly a wonder for the senses.

But about 3/4 of the way through, cracks appeared in the facade. The illusions flickered in and out, and eventually disappeared. Actors clutched their stomachs and collapsed on stage. At first we thought something was wrong, but others called out that that was part of the play. The flying carpets trembled then began falling! On top of the rest of the audience. Now we knew something was badly wrong!

We raced out of the way of the carpets, then helped the injured people and the old out of the tent. The crowds panicked so one of my companions slashed other exits into the fabric walls of the tent theatre. Eventually, enough of the crowd got out to calm the crowd somewhat, lines formed and people filed out.

Looking around, the astral was open. But most of the actors and carnival crew were laying on the ground, moaning, some having thrown up, others clutching their stomachs. I examined a few with my Physician’s abilities and concluded that they had been poisoned, probably by something they ate.

Then we heard a voice cry out, “Help!”, from outside the tent, towards the ticket booth. Racing there, we arrived to see Onyx the Destroyer laying on the ground, bleeding from multiple wounds, his magnificent shield shattered on the ground next to him. Uh, no. The shield was just wood, covered in a thin metal covering. The festival illusionists must’ve magicked it to appear special. And Onyx, well, laying on the ground, he looked like a young troll, sleeping off a keg of beer, that is, until you saw the gaping wounds.

I stabilized him and did my best to clean and seal and bandage his wounds. He’ll live, but will take a while recovering. We managed to wake him up — turned out he’s an actor Named Clarence — and he explained what happened. About a half hour ago, four or five ork thugs appeared, and attacked him. Three of the works had sword, and there was at least one archer among them. They were dressed all in black and they’d arrived on horseback. He remembered nothing more until we woke him up. When asked why he hadn’t been poisoned like the rest of the cast and crew, Clarence said that the employee dinner was fish stew, which he detests, so he didn’t eat any. So, it’s most likely that the stew had been poisoned.

Our surmise was that the bandits had planned the heist for tonight, knowing that the entire week’s profits would be in the till. Several thousand silver, by our probably conservative estimate.

Meanwhile, Nib talked to any witnesses, but didn’t learn anything more. Jarock examined the arrow I’d removed from Clarence, and declared it to be the kind used by common bandits.

By now the chaos at the festival had mostly subsided, but there were still the poisoned crew and some shocked and injured audience members. I found a young boy, maybe 10 years old, and asked him if he knew where the Temple of Garlen was in Throal. He nodded yes, so I offered him one silver now, and another tomorrow, if he’d go to the temple, and tell them that there were poisoned and hurt people at the festival who needed their help. I agreed, grabbed my silver and ran off. In the correct direction.

Laz tried tracking the orcs in conjunction with Mal’s Mystic Pursuit, using the arrow as the token. The Mystic Pursuit indicated the bandits were due east of here. Having done all we could do to contain the chaos here, we set off in search of the bandits. Laz and Mal led, followed by Jarock and me, with Nib watching overhead.

We traveled through the night, made camp, and were up early to continue the search. The tracks struck out across country, not following any defined roads. Yet, the tracks were easy to follow and confirmed by the Mystic Pursuit. As we traveled, the Servos Jungle loomed closer and closer on the horizon. We were headed straight for it.

On the next day, around mid-day we found the bandits’ campfire from the night before. By now by examining the tracks, we were convinced that there were five oaks in the party. Near the campfire’s remains we found. Brown and black striped band. Jarock recognized it as a small town thug identifier, “Dahnat’s Clan,” comprised mainly of common ork thugs. They’re mainly located at the entrance to Throal. We took the band just in case we needed it for Mystic Pursuit.

About two hours before sunset, we caught sight of a horse, and then two more to the north. We were now at the very edge of the Servos. The horses had probably been stolen, along with their tack, both of low quality. Still, we removed the tack from the horses and let them roam where they wanted.

We followed the tracks into the Jungle. Once inside, the path meandered to and fro, and eventually we found that we’d circled around and were now heading east. Here, the astral was somewhat murky, but not horrible.

We neared a land bridge that connected to what looked like a largish island in the jungle. Then Mal stopped us, and pointed out webs up ahead and large creatures in the jungle canopy that looked like giant spiders. Someone in the group identified them as Giant Weaver Spiders. There were five of them at first count. Our best knowledge was that these spiders could poison us and then once the poison took effect, they’d wrap us in cocoons for later meals. Not something I’d want to experience.

Nonetheless, we fought the spiders. There were a few tense moments when one spider took on Nib, one-on-one. But between Mal and Jarock, they made short work of the spiders. We recovered to a degree, and continued on.

We had lost the tracks shortly before encountering the spiders, so now after passing the spiders’ webs, we continued onward. On the other side of the lake, we found a dinghy, barely seaworthy, with the familiar tracks of our ork bandits. We stove in the boat so that they could not use it to make a fast retreat. The tracks led to a more rocky terrain and eventually a cave entrance (hex 38.09).

he astral was clear, so we entered the cave. A few feet down the passageway, we saw an intricate design on the floor. The design is perhaps best described as a child’s rendition of the Rites of Protection and Passage in crayon. Perhaps this was intended to scare off the mundane? Just past the design, there was a trip wire, which Mal tripped on purpose, causing a lot of rocks to fall down. If he’d been where the trap expected him to be, he’d have been damaged, or even crushed, by the rocks. As it was, the rocks were a nuisance, making the path into the caves tighter, but nothing more.

Up ahead we saw a glow coming from deeper within the cave system. Shortly thereafter, the passage opened into a large cavern. On the other side of the cavern were a good number of large, reddish mushrooms. A ledge on the right side of the cave obscured anything further there. And then we noticed the four works.

Battle ensued. At one point Jarock was seriously hurt, and I had to keep him awake to get him to stand up and fight. It turned out that there were five orks in total: four thugs and one boss. We knocked the boss unconscious and killed two of the thugs, at which point the remaining two orks surrendered.

I swapped matrices and cast Soulless Eyes. This and some theatrics convinced the works to tell all they knew. According to the orks — Otto and Kramer — the theft had been the idea of an ork Named Stryker. Stryker and their boss, Grunshilk, worked up the details. Stryker ran a shop in the Dahnat, called Dahnat’s Hides. The plan was that they’d meet up with Stryker in four days time in Throal and everyone would get their cut. They’d put the Giant Red Mushroom poison into the festival company’s dinner, a stew, as we had suspected. We took samples of the mushrooms to give to the Temple of Garlen in Throal; perhaps the mushrooms would help them create an antidote for the poison.

On the ledge, we found a huge amount silver and a chest, obviously the take from the festival theft. We packed up the silver, and returned to Throal with it along with the three living orks. We turned the oaks over to the Throalic police and returned the silver to the Festival. Stryker’s shop had been cleared out.

Library note - Having snuck a look at Lazulin’s journal, I apologize for the state of my previous journal entries. I will make a serious effort to present a journal worthy of being included in the Great Library.

While milling around the job posting board having found nothing I could do today, I heard a town crier announcing the final night for a play called “Trials of Erilis Splinterhorn” at Phaelon's Festival of Wonders. The last play I saw had puppets, so I figured I would expand my horizons and have a look. On my way out of Throal, the festival grounds being only about a 30-minute walk from the gates, I met up with several friends who also were looking for some entertainment; Nib the Windling Wizard, Bloodbeat the T’skrang Nethermancer, Jarock the Orc Weaponsmith, and Lazulin the Troll Raider

When we got to the fairgrounds, the regular fair had closed down to focus on the play. There was a large impressive Troll named Onyx The Destroyer guarding the ticket booth where we had the option of general admission or large flying carpets that would give the best view. I have never flown before, but my gut tells me that your only option is down when you are up in the air. Other than the Windling, the rest of the group were either in agreement with me or were too poor for the upcharge. General admission it was, and we filed into the huge tent to find a good spot.

There were actors and illusions that worked together seamlessly to reenact the sealing of Travar. I noticed a couple of the actors doing things that looked off-script but didn’t realize what was going on until the flying carpets stopped flying. Several of us used our talents to try and help people to safety. We then moved to the stage where the actors were frozen in place. Bloodbeat diagnosed them as being poisoned. We heard a call for help outside and went to lend aid. We found the Troll had been attacked and all the proceeds from ticket sales for the week had been stolen. "Onyx" told us a group of Orc bandits had attacked him and fled west with the money. After making sure someone was getting help, we started tracking the bandits.

I used my talent to get a bead on the direction they fled while Lazulin used his tracking skills to keep us on their trail. We followed them through the night and the next day before having to stop for the night to keep from dropping. The bandits picked up some horses along the way, but with Nib’s spells, we could keep up easily. Early the next day, we made it to the Servos Jungle, where we found the bandit’s abandoned horses. We entered the jungle and tracked the bandits to an island-type area when I spotted an ambush. There were five giant weaver spiders in the trees waiting to pounce. We got the drop on them and took them out with only some minor wounds. Following the bandit’s trail finally led us to a cave where they had holed up.

We entered the cave and immediately spotted a tripwire set to drop a bunch of stone on our heads. Jarock accidentally sprung the trap while trying to avoid it but jumped out of the way and did not take damage. Of course, this alerted the bandits and they were ready for us when we got to the main area. There were four Orc bandits and one Orc leader who was a decent archer, as Jarock found out by taking an arrow to the chest. This led to Jarock being a target dummy for the bandits to shoot at, but with Nib’s spells, he was able to avoid and shrug off a considerable amount of potential damage. Bloodbeat used her scary spells to give the party advantages in combat while Lazulin literally jumped into the fray. Jarock’s luck finally ran out, and he went down to a very lucky shot. I thought he was surely gone, but he recovered almost instantly with Bloodbeat’s help and was back up in seconds. We were able to take down two of the bandits and seriously hurt the third when Lazulin knocked out the leader, causing the final two to surrender.

Bloodbeat used her particularly effective spells to interrogate the surviving bandits to determine that this job had been planned by someone called Stryker back in Throal. We didn’t get much more useful information, so we spent the night in the cave and brought the bandits back to Throal the next day to hand them over to the guard.

<Throalic Date Equivalent to September 7, 2020>

To Whom It May Concern at the Great Library

Friends and I attended a marvelous historical play the other day at Phaelon’s Festival of Wonders. A truly extraordinary production on the closing of Travar before the Scourge, told with significant flare and magnificent illusions that brought the tale to life.

Alas, we did not get to see the climax of Phaelon’s Thespian efforts, as the performance was hijacked by a band of nefarious thieves. The Thieves’ had poisoned a number of the players with a delayed acting agent, causing them to double over in pain, including the illusionist maintaining the elite flying carpet seats over the stage area. My friends and I did what we could to save the plummeting patrons of the arts, but chaos ensued, allowing the thieves to make a break for it with the production company’s cashbox. We found the actor playing the heroic troll lead badly injured from his efforts to prevent the purloinary, and gave pursuit after sending a messenger for help to the Temple of Garlen.

The thieves led us on a merry chase to the west over the next day or two, til we reached a lake on the edge of the Servos (hex 38.09). They had left a clever trap to ensnare any who might pursue them, and all I can say is no windling should meet a spider larger than himself, let alone a nest of them with the ability to hit a target at 50 paces with poison spit that turns whatever it touches into digestible mush for an arachnoid feast! *shudder*. My companions and I dispatched the eight legged ooglies and took our fear and disgust out on the helpless skif the thieves had used to bypass the land bridge full of creepy crawlies and their webs. I helpfully wrote “HA HA” in firefly chalk on the battered boats, to greet the thieves should they try to make their escape – it seemed an appropriate return for their web filled doorbell.

We tracked the villains to a nearby cave (see Appendix for map) and were not at all shocked that the thugs had deployed traps to protect their hide out. Jarock, using all the subtlety he is known for, helpfully sprawled past the danger zone of all the falling rocks and displayed his trip wire triumphantly.

We moved deeper into the cave and engaged the villains in quite a warm fight if I do say so myself. Mal kept up a withering rain of arrow fire while Bloodbeat and I slung spells to keep the party protected and the oafs ducking. Lazulin was magnificent teaching the thieves that poking an angry troll just does not end well, while Jarok more than made up for his earlier silliness with the trip wire (tho I did not approve of what he did with it to that poor thief during the interrogation, I mean, really….)

Bloodbeat took a number of flesh and blood samples from the surviving captives, and Kramer and Otto seemed eager to make reparations working in the mines of Throal rather than continue under her gentle care. Their leader, one Grunshilk, also seemed eager to make reparations and didn’t hesitate to turn on his fixer, one Stryker, who I am under the impression is a lower level mob boss who has a front business selling hides in the Dahnat in Throal. I leave follow-up on Stryker’s business associations in the capable hands of the Guard.

We returned the troupe's goods, checked that they were recovering, and gratefully accepted our reward (tho I don't think Lazulin noticed Phaelon the illusionist copying his visage and heroic great spear. I neglected to point it out to my companion since I'm pretty sure Phaelon will portray him heroically, at least if he has any sense, that is, and the co-star Phaelon had fawning over the Lazulin look alike was quite attractive). I find it better to let these things run their natural course rather than get involved in the subtleties of troll honor.

Yours in Service,

Nib

The text remains unaltered to maintain its authenticity. It is written in Or'zet.

Found a fair from Travar outside. Seemed boring, but went anyway. Either be bored there or be bored in Throal. 5 silver pieces to enter. Massive illusionary show. Very convincing. Even thought the disaster was part of the show. The disaster was caused by poison used by thieves to divert attention away from a heist. Flying carpets fell out of the air. Actors were debilitated. Onyx the Destroyer was injured. We pursued the thieves and captured them. Also fought spiders along the way.

Nib displayed powerful magic, but still paranoid about astral space. Made me nearly impossible to hit and added extra padding to my armor. I did more damage straining myself than the enemies did. Mal was hot and cold. Sometimes did great, sometimes didn't do much. Lazulin is a very talented Troll Raider. Very effective in combat. More so at tracking. Bloodbeat, don't get on her bad side. Scary effective at interrogation. Made her enemies wet themselves. Loves tearing off own face. Saved my ass, too. I went unconscious at one point, but she woke me up moments later. Not bad looking either, but I swore of spell slingers. Last one was a massive embarrassment. I took a lot of hits for the team, but only ever hit one thing. Forgot how to smack shit for some reason, but smacked a spider across a lake. Pretty sure it split into several pieces, possibly dust.

Checked out the Dahnat Hides shop, completely empty. Actors and Onyx fully recovered. The thieves are in custody. Still hate journals. Weaponsmith, not Scholar.

The wise warrior is familiar with that which he fights for. As such, I decided to visit a local traveling cirque, Phaelon's Festival of Wonders. They had arrived from Travar and it was their last night.

I went to take in the final performance of the Trials of Erilis Splinterhorn. While it lasted, it was a rather inspiring tale of an elementalist who sacrificed themselves to light the fireshield of Travar. Unfortunately it did not finish, the performance was interrupted part way through, the actors began to fall ill. This caused chaos within the tent, as there were hundreds of people, many of whom had been on flying carpets above the crowd to be a greater part to the illusory story. I, and a number of other adepts who had attended the show, quickly jumped into action as the crowd began to panic. I cut open an exit in the tent and drew the attention of panicked theatre goers with the Point of Triumph.

The other adepts were Bloodbeat the Nethermancer, Nib the Wizard, Malonin Tyrnith the Archer, and Jarock Hammer-Shield a Weaponsmith and father of an adept I've travelled with before. The actors had been poisoned while the box office was robbed of the weeks earnings. The 'champion', Onyx, was beaten and bloodied when he intervened.

We spent the next day and a half tracking them west, finally cornering them in the Servos Jungle. The thieves were either smart or lazy, I suspect more lazy. The only stretch of land that lead to the hole they hid within was naturally guarded by large predatory spiders. Mal spied them before they could surprise us, so we turned the tables. Jarock felt we should knock themThe Point of Triumph burst with golden light as we worked together to drivethe beasts off. Keeping an eye upon Jarock, I better understand how Vralino struggles so in combat. He spent most of the time trying to fake out the spiders by ducking and weaving, throwing off his balance to swing the warhammer. Finally as the spiders turned to flee, he connected with a wild flail though.

We stalked into the hideout, and Jarock pushed to the front. In response to the warning of the tripwire, he promptly set it off. For us, the element of surprise was lost. However, Jarock was not prepared for the enemy at the end of the tunnel. Arrows buried themselves in the middle aged ork, and battle was joined. I moved into the middle of the chamber with the Point of Triumph a glow to shed light upon our situation. It buried into the bandit in front of me and I turned to face his comrades. On the right side of the cave was an ork with a bow who was apparently the leader. Mal and the casters provided supporting fire from the cave while I moved to take some pressure off Jarock, the mages finishing the job. We finally subdued the leader and the remaining bandits surrendered.

While I accounted for the missing revenue, there was an overly sadistic interrogation of the two bandits. We bound them all and returned to Throal, returning the earnings to the cirque and turning these members of the Donaut Clan over to the authorities. We did not find the mastermind going by the name of Stryker, but hopefully his lesson has been learned, less our paths cross in the future.

It was a party of convenience, but the battle is not always joined when you are ready. So your weapons are what you can make do with. Malonin is a weapon of war, his arrows rarely missed their mark and struck true when they hit. Nib provided support for the rest of the party, allowing us to keep up with our quarry and be more resilient in battle, helping with spells against our foes where he could. Bloodbeat as well helped us make the battlefield our own, fearing and tearing away at their spirits. Jarock's daughter was obviously taught her offensive capabilities from her father, which makes me understand why she is better on defense. Jarock has the dreams of a fighter, but the heart of a storyteller. He fights as the hero's of a troubadours greatly flourished tales, not like the blade that a warrior must be. We shall test his skills at the forge and measure him against his daughter's travelling companion.

Turns out Onyx the Destroyer probably isn't the odds on favorite to win the Founder's Tournament. A small gang known as Dahnut's clan has big ambitions with their boss Stryker in hiding.
