Kickstarter - more ideas

Postby Trejes » Tue Jan 14, 2014 1:58 pm

First of all I am very happy to see the project funded in less than a day. I was too late for early bird hardcovers, but I'm so happy to see a new edition for Earthdawn that I will buy the hardcovers nevertheless.

But let's come to the reason for this post:
Your kickstarter projekt is a bit ... uncreative. Mainly books plus pdfs. Ok, there are posters and a t-shirt. But we don't know how they will look, so that's a risk.

When you wrote in the forum that you will do a kickstarter to fund production and the art I was curious as to what the rewards would be. Pictures? Maps? Other art? Fancy or funny stuff which doesn't cost you a lot of money but will earn you money to spent for the development of Earthdawn?
I don't mean this in an unpolite or rude way but to only come up with an online game session (with way to much books included) is a bit dissapointing.

The project is funded and I'm very happy about this, but still I want to share some ideas/wishes for better rewards. Maybe you want to add some to earn more money for an even better 4th edition or to fund later products.

You included the online game session with autographed books. There's your first idea. Add autographed books (for maybe 10 $ more). Or even write a whole thank you sentence.

Lot's of kickstarters added credits to their products. Depending on how much someone pledges he or she will be included in the credits.

Give me not just posters of which I don't know how they look but the Earthdawn map. I really want a new one.

Luckyly you didn't have to beg for the project to be funded but you could have included something like dices or stuff. Just to earn some money to use it for the books.

Use the new art. If you will use all new pictures and drawings for the new books then you can kind of sell them:

You could sell the discipline pictures. Pledge level: some hundret dollars: Your favorite character as a disciplin picture. You can write us a description of you character and our artist will draw him accordingly.
(If you do it like first edition with two disciplin pictures, one could be a favorite char of a backer and the other a first circle example char.)

Include coloured pictures. The same as above. But we all will get some coloured pages just for the flavor of the game and some persons will get their own hero in the official book (without stats, just a picture underwritten with "Krull! the warrior king, sponsored by Otto Smith"). I have no idea how much you would have to pay your artists for drawing after the description of someone else but some of us Earthdawn lovers since the 90s have some real jobs now and are able to pay some money for real cool stuff.

Has someone else an oppinion on this? Or is everybody happy with new books? No one in for a new map?

I'm thinking its possible that no one thought that the Kickstarter would instantly be funded and they probably thought they would have a few weeks to get stretch goals in place.

If the Developers want some cool reward ideas check out this . I'm one of the anthology authors (shameless plug), but the guy that's running it has plenty of rewards and add-ons. Everything from cool bookmarks to Ed Greenwood of Forgotten Realms fame writing a story!

Agree with above.

The problem is that for people outside US the campaign is worthless (except for funding new edition of course!). Paying 1/4 price of the books for shipping when you don't know how new edition will look like is russian roulette and shirt or poster won't be satisfing when things go wrong.

I know you weren't expecting reaching goal so fast, but now it's time to think how to reward all fans for trust and money. More rewards, more new stuff and announcements (especially them!) with examples of new stuff. Make Shards with new rules and give them to people to test them out. Even if I would have to wait to next summer I definetly would like to help.

More info to advertise ED to new people. More things for backers. Think international. Do on-line rewards :) New map is example of great reward and for me it would be even better than shirt and posters. Adding dice? Q-workshop already made ED dice so you can ask them to make something new for the money you raised and to celebrate new edition. Think big. Think modern ;)

This kind of thing comes up all the time (and not just game Kickstarters, btw). Why does every Kickstarter have to be filled with toys and posters and gewgaws, and addon after addon?

The focus on this KS seems to be clear enough: make sufficient funds to cover new artwork and get ED4 rulebooks out in time for GenCon. Simple and to the point. No muss, no fuss! :)

There seems to be an expectation that Kickstarters should present more "stuff" that, personally, I think is one of the contributors to delays in Kickstarter rewards. The more tiers or rewards, the more complex the Kickstarter is to manage, the larger the drain on team resources to deliver.

Keep it simple, but deliver on time and as promised. If this Kickstarter is successful, then plan another one for forthcoming products! And as you get more practice with Kickstarter projects (get your internal admin in place), THEN you can offer more specialist add-ons.

All my opinion, of course. I like shiny toys as much as the next fan, but I also want this to succeed so that we get more stuff down the line.

Oh, and for non-US fans, it's become quite public in Kickstarter circles that the cost of shipping from the US to elsewhere in the world is hideously expensive and getting markedly more expensive again this year. If you look at the Evil Hat (the FATE publishers) blog, there's posts on there about it. There's similar posts on various roleplaying forums and a Google search will bring up more.

If one of the goals of a successful ED4 kickstarter is to be able to print sufficient copies of the books to get them out into distribution outside the US, then that's a good thing. I suspect that it is, or at least I'm reading the hints that it is (hope I am correct).

Again, more reason for keeping the Kickstarter scope tightly under control and ensuring funding goes towards getting the game out into the public's hands.

TBH, as a tier award, I'd like to see some art as part of the backer swag. Autographed art. They can be prints, but still be art none-the-less.

Barring that, I look forward to stretch goals. :) It's still early in the KS. 29 more days to think of things but the sooner you do the more money you'll bring in.

Also suggestion, while you're thinking of doing a travar book look to Jerris, the Wastes and the outlying poison forest as one geographical area to mine. :)

Are the books normal sized are 'tablet' sized like EDR?

I'm at work now and can't double check the kickstarter.
