Re: Names for the Noble
Are you looking for a list of noble houses? Or simply a list of names that fit the cultures of each noble house?

Re: Names for the Noble
First, middle and surnames for the noble houses. It's one of the things that comes up frequently for GMs. When the FS3 books come out, there will certainly be some first time GMs looking high and low for a little guidance naming their nobles. I know the first time I GM'd a game and needed to pull the name of a noble out thin air, I said "umm, hold on let me think" because players will go off the ranch and force some fancy thought work.

Re: Names for the Noble
What about, instead of tying names to factions, what about simply listing names by etnicity? I for one will often cloud faction etnicities, especially for the huge multi-world factions, making African Hawkwoods, Chinese Hazat, Italian Decados, or what have you.
I would also like to see weird names, rare names, or even SciFi names cathegories.

Re: Names for the Noble
Hey, I am up for anything. My thoughts on naming, each house tends to have its own "culture" and the houses have been around enough that there are some pretty common first names etc. As far as ethnicity is concerned, the game takes place over 10,000 years from now, if memory serves me(please correct me if I'm wrong). I think at this point there would be few strong ethnic divides. Names tend to transcend ethnicity in a cultural context, you won't see it in a life time, but given enough time, there will be clearly established "good Hawkwood names" that are popular in that houses culture. I once played a Li Halan questing knight that was black, one of the other players seemed to think that you could only be "Asian" if you were Li Halan. I think that's a ham fisted simplification of known worlds complex culture.
Names also have a tendancy to go in and out of style, so there are few popular names today that will be enjoying wide circulation in the games setting. I think names for nobles will have a certain bearing that reflects that houses values and character. There might be names with an ethnic heratige, but they are used out of context.
Just putting in perspective how much time has gone by, in a paltry 200 years the US has gone from enslaving Africans to having an African American Presidant. The Known Worlds have eclipsed that a hundred times, our divisions have little to with how they draw their maps, and align their loyalties.

The FS setting is set approximately 3000 years into the future (FS3 starting in 5010 AD).
I don't believe in grand universal cultures, and to me local cultures will always be a stronger definer for most characters. Of course, we do not want to detail every culture on every world, so we make do with generalisations.

Re: Names for the Noble
I have to tell this story....::facepalm::
In the current FS game I am playing in it, there is a Decados Earl......his name is Earl...yes Earl Earl....AND his ship is painted like the General Lee (you know, the car from the Dukes of Hazzard).....this is totally not my fault.

Re: Names for the Noble
There were two great posts about this on the old boards. One simply had names by cultures. I tend to think of each planet having a few cultures in each. I.E. One Li Halan world may be made up of a mix of Chinese and Korean names, while a different Li Halan planet may be more Japanese and Vietnamese.
As for grand universal cultures, I think that it's important for the game, especially with players who haven't read through all of the material the same way that we have, to play up the stereotypes. They need to get a sense for how the setting works before you start layering in depth to each of the factions. Additionally, it's stated in canon that most of the settlers on each of the worlds came from one culutural / religious faction at the point of settlement, so most planets would be fairly homogeneous.
I'd personally love to get a list of 'sci fi' names because I think it's helpful to name guilders.
