In our world, the Battle of Isandlwana was one of the great massacres of the Zulu Wars, a shocking setback for British might in Africa, and a wake-up call for both sides. In the alt-history steamweird game world of 1879, the Battle of Isandlwana went a bit differently, and had considerably different impact on the course of history. I'm not much of a historian and I haven't been following 1879 all that closely, but as Zulu is one of my all time favorite movies i enjoyed reading this blog as I've read quite a bit about Rourke's Drift and the Battle of Isandlwana.

Actually I'm still trying to sort all the changes in my head. It really does read like good history. I'm not familiar with King Nbomani so I'm guessing that's added or at least being awarded Guardian of the British Empire is. Again I don't remember ever reading about an eclipse of the sun during the battle, but its a nice touch even if it did happen. I can really imaging the troops singing Men of Harlech as the eclipse ends.

I actually wonder what the troops really thought of the Zulus as warriors. I imagine the fighting men had some kind of mutual respect whereas the snooty officer type likely thought otherwise (maybe that's just me stereotyping). I believe one issue all the troops had against the Zulus was how they mutilated the corpses of the dead.

It really is hard to think what such an alternative history would have on not just Africa but the Empire. Years ago I read about the making of the movie and the film company was told it wasn't allowed to pay the Zulu actors a proper wage as it was against the law (or something equally as stupid).
