Roth - thanks very much for your input. Always good to hear from someone who's had boots on the ground, so to speak.

As far as the scale goes, part of the issue may be that our minis are being designed and produced by Ral Partha Europe. We may in fact have problems with the North American market, but do well in Europe. Or we could do well in both markets, or poorly in both. Only time, as you said, will really tell. That being said, there's also the possibility we could introduce die-hard roleplayers to minis gaming through the interlinking on the two product lines. These would be people who aren't already committed to the NA larger-scale standard.

In any case, we're not pinning our hopes of success on any one product line. If the minis game does well, fine. If the RPG does well, fine. If one of them doesn't perform so well, we'll see how long we can carry it before we have to call it a lesson learned. If neither do well, we've got other products we can bring out. Basic business. As Line Developer for 1879, it is my fervent hope that 1879 overall does well. Based on the response we've had to our minis sneak peek at last year's GenCon, and the RPG sneak peek I did at MystiCon last weekend, I have some foundation for that hope.

And who knows? Maybe North America will warm up to a European standard. Didn't work so well with the metric system, but there's fewer people to convert with a miniatures scale.

I could toss up memos, reports, links, charts, graphs, etc. until my fingers fell off. It wouldn't matter.

That is why I said You guys are going to do what you're going to do. That has been made abundantly clear.

Yeah. At this point we are pretty much locked into what we are doing. So, as you say, we are going to do what we are going to do. I guess my concern as just a guy running the game and working for the company is what I can do to make it fun for the people that play it.

The scale definitely takes some getting used to as someone who has only played in larger scale games but it has kind of grown on me.

As some-one interested in 1879, do the 'heroic' larger scale figurines usually come based in units/blocks like the 15/18mm ones shown for the game now? Or is the US 'heroic' scale market more used to individually based figurines?

I'd throw in that over here in the UK 15mm is regularly referred to as "GOS" "God's own scale" and is the preference for a lot of gamers, both historical and fictional.

The main reason seems to be that it's the closest to the 1:72 or HO/OO scale that most gamers grew up with as toy models, modelling kits (such as Airfix) and train sets. Therefore historical units and terrain were easy to source in "regular" high street hobby & toy shops - especially when specialist gaming stores have often been few & far between.

It's often historically a much cheaper scale to get into at an entry level as miniatures are usually less than the 20, 25 or 28+mm equivalent.

Oh well.

I guess. I don't think it is a wise move.
