Armor of the Pancreator and Shield of Faith

Postby MBdS » Mon Sep 24, 2012 5:00 am

the description from these theurgy rites describe them as similar to an energy shield. are they subject to shield overload and burnout? can the shut down times be reduced like for a normal energy shield when do they happen (i assume Tech Redemption won't be the right skill, though)?
opinions?

i can stand the shield breakers affecting theurgic shields. no problem.
what about instead of the possibility to diminish the shut down time using Tech Redemption? gm's fiat? rerolling the skill to activate the theurgy?

Hm... another good question. Roll Faith + Theurgy perhaps?

yeah, i was thinking so. or simply they can't do it and that's all. afterall the powers last Theurgy minutes... quite long for a typical battle based on 3 seconds turns (3 minutes, the minimum to acquire the power, is 60 turns... !__!)

Also true. I think it is important to differentiate between a super tech energy barrier and a supernatural force field; they work much the same but they (game mechanics-wise) but they are probably not related (meta-)physically. At least, I'm personally not comfortable with TL7 gadgets replicating spiritual/magical effects - to me they are completely different.

technology so advanced that seems magic... who knows on which physics paradigm they're working on at TL8? it's so far removed. but to avoid all this chatting i would explained the rules for this rites without involving energy shields and recalling their rules.
it's difficult for players to get it, especially if they've been playing 10 years d20 System, you know?

TL9 is explicitly described as "Technology that seems to be nothing less than magic", so TL8 should probably not fit into that allegory as well, let alone TL7 (i.e. personal energy shields). But yeah, these discussions fall apart really fast as it is all fantasy science anyway. The only thing that makes the technology of an energy shield not magic is the in-game decision for it not to be magic ;)

And yeah, being a scientist doesn’t help understanding fantasy-tech at all – quite to the contrary actually, heh heh
