Your best Fading Suns sessions.

Postby Tadeus » Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:34 am

Mine was one of the first sessions we’ve played in the group. The party was stranded on Pandemonium and wanted to make some money for a ticket back to civilization. After some searching they found three guildsmen who wanted them to check on their joint project (a geological research station) that was about 100km away from the Hub in the Badlands and with which they lost contact about two weeks ago.

As the party arrived at the specified location (after a long journey which part of they shared with the pilgrims going to the Cathedral) they found an abandoned post with a very deep drilling tunnel and some underground levels. At dusk they stumbled upon the first crushed human bones near the shaft and then it was pretty much Pitch Black, just with a shorter night cycle. Some very nice scary moments for the players :)

One of my personal favorite moments as a GM was when my Firefly-ish cadre of freighters, having hatched out a perfect plan to generate some cash by importing water from Icon to Pyre, were stopped by the Pyre customs service and repremanded for trying to smuggle water onto Pyre, a place that the Pancreator has chosen to be a penance to the faithfull. The look on my players' faces went something like this :shock: :( :o :cry:

Very fun session that one ;)

Oh gosh.. there are several...

Sir Marco gaining the "Domino" to avenge his family name and kill his father. "My name is Sir Marco Rodriguez Dulcinea de Casca Bell. I killed my father.. prepare to die."

Rhombus Tomchombo- Gannok Engineer who decided to get religion and wrote up the "Calculations of Faith" which got him sternly looked at by various church types.

The time we found a lost planet that was an old pleasure planet. Several golems were still active and did not take too kindly to the new "guests" It was patterned after Disney World.

Well, first post, may as well be a nostalgic look back at some 14/15 years playing FS!

My first ever session was the most memorable, the GM was very good despite it being my first game with a new group. I also didn't know the setting or the system. I was playing my noble, a Hawkwood, Sir Daniel Kieron Hawkwood to be precise - a character I went on to play in weekly sesssions for a few years, but I digress;

I was performing as a translator onboard an Obun ship which was being captained by an elderly and more experienced Hawkwood. It was meant to be a simple training exercise however we became aware of another craft on sensors - eventually, and not far from Gwyneth, we learnt it was a Symbiont spore vessel (Probably of the GM's devising). I didn't know what it was due to my ignorance of the system until all hell broke loose, the GM kicked in some pounding soundtrack background music and I was rolling dice like I was in Vegas (Being from the UK it was an odd situation as I've never been to the US nor, at that point, a casino). Another player leant over; "You played Starcraft?" - "Yeah" - "You seen The Thing?" - "Duh. Yeah" - "Combine Zerg and The Thing. Symbionts." :think:

We came under fire from a second Symbiont vessel that had been missed off sensors - a support/structural beam impaled the Captain and I was then left with a bridge full of young Obun looking to me for guidance;
"Open fire!"
"But Captain, we're too far away and they're entering the atmosphere!"
"Then follow damn you! See to it man and make haste!"
"This isn't an atmospheric ship Captain, we can't."
"You can and you WILL! That filth will not taint the beauty of my homeworld. All weapons focus on that vile vessel and let loose!"

Proceed to many Obun pleas to not follow due to the craft being incapable of atmospheric travel and much gusto in the RP dept. from myself insisting and demanding we did so. It worked - barely - and we stopped it.

The reason it was so memorable? Any Charioteer from then on referred to it as the "DK maneauver" - how to bounce an non-atmospheric craft across an atmosphere whilst raining fire onto an eneny target - they were taught it in flight school and by other Charioteers.

DK went on to some pretty memorable capers and an explosively awesome and for me a rather emotional death fighting off Vuldrok using a space-craft as a battering ram whilst his comrades, confidants and colleagues made their hasty escape in the life-pods. I miss DK!

There are many other fine and epic moments our group had - from players being purely daft (Long story, but results in the oft used insult in and out of games now of "Do it or I'll kick you naked. And I have a grenade." through to quite emotional NPC deaths, lofty political and Noble ascenions and sullying ourselves with cybernetic orgies, narcotics and other vileness.

I have so many. I can say that bar no other game FS has ignited our imaginations and kept us entertained more than any other game for many years. I have many loves; Exalted, SLA Industries, Cthulhutech, Trinity, WoD, Rolemaster .... but it's FS that gives us the best anecdotes.

El-Phantasmo... that was pretty good.. no.. I dare say Awesome. Your descriptions were there and you could almost see the scene play out.

I think that would be a good blurb for like a FS pamphlet if there was one. Not only does it show an excitement for the game but builds on what creates memories in the world of Role Playing in general.

My best session ever would still have to be the time my group of a Decados and a Brother Battle, with their NPC engineer, went into Vuldrok space. They were hunting a thane who was causing them a lot of problems. The Decados did not have the build or the equipment to pose as a Vuldrok - too weedy, and he used a rapier, or more often his wit and no weapons at all. The engineer was a tiny woman, dead-eye shot but not imposing at all. The Brother Battle was over six feet tall and built like all Brothers, and she had Adept Robes. The conversation when they decided to promote her to leader was priceless. They had her wear a sarape over the jumpgate cross and started calling her Thane Bess instead of Sister Elizabeth. They had a great chase across Hargard and Frost, fast moving, with an individual challenge on Frost between Thane Bess and the Vuldrok thane. Then they had to convince the Vuldrok followers that Thane Bess did not want their allegiance. Then the name stuck - from then on, anytime they interacted with Vuldrok, on Leminkainen or anywhere, Sister Elizabeth would be hailed as Thane Bess, and all the Vuldrok would look to this Brother Battle instead of listening to the nobles she was with.

I would say a close second was the time the Eskatonic realized that Armor of the Pancreator would defend against regular grenades. He wouldn't throw them. He'd just run up to the target monster or husk or whatever and drop a grenade. Boom!

Noble vs Church - always good for giggles;

Not thought of that use for AotP ... must resist urge to try it when I get back into a game. :)

We've had some great sessions. The best session ever with my current players was the first time they were attacked by Space Pirates. They actually called out 'places, everyone'. They were thrilled to bits. Put the best actor on the bridge to beg for mercy and lure the pirates in, and everyone else got ready to attack. Not defend. Attack. They were much more concerned about the pirate ship escaping than with repelling boarders. It was a close fight, but with very memorable, still discussed scenes involving zero-gravity (the engineer turned their own gravity off), throw group (used at first to put the pirates into melee with the rest of the group, then later used to prevent pirates from escaping back to their own ship), and it ended with the party members chasing the surviving pirates into the pirate ship. I found out afterwards that they had played West End Star Wars for years, and they were masters at winning fights with pirates. It was an epic fight, but the rest of the session, shoot, three sessions to follow, were overshadowed by that one battle.
