We used an alternate ruleset with a more mechanical system, so we can't really do without miniatures most of the time.
For the longest time we used a selection of GW minies. The Necromunda Gangers were especially good for PCs. I also had a sprinkling of other miniatures from other lines. About 4 years ago we scrapped pewter in favor of Lego Minifigures. They're a lot more customizable and it's easier to denote status and condition.

Re: Miniatures
Out of interest, what scale of minis do people prefer here.
I've played a lot of different skirmish games, and other games like Epic etc, so I know that scale is quite meaningful for giving the right feel for a game. My personal favourite is anything 32mm to 35mm as the minis look more normal proportioned than the GW oversized hands and heads.
For reference my collection of Rackham minis, and Warmachine minis.

Re: Miniatures
I tend to use a variety of "28mm" miniatures - from a variety of manufacturers. Some are even 25mm so I base them slightly higher so they don't look too out of place.
Check my blog (link in the sig file), my instagram or Facebook (if you can find me) for more images and for some of my other paintjobs (including Warhammer 40k, and miniatures White Wolf's (now Onyx Path's) Trinity Continuum games).

Re: Miniatures
To be honest, I don't really care what scale we use. The minis should of course fit on the Noble Armada floorplans (which I guess are made for minis in the 28 or so range?), and as long as I can use the mini game to run skirmishes during RPG skirmishes, I'll be happy That said, I really liked the old WEG Star Wars mini game, which used... 28mm scale I think? (Or was it smaller?) That game was as broken as anything WEG ever did, ruleswise, but it was realy interesting to play a game where weapons had a 60 inch range and so on, which made it a very different game from W40K.

Re: Miniatures
I have a load of the WotC Star Wars minis and back in the day had some of the metal (Grenadier?) Star Wars minis that we used for the WEG SW RPG. Those were all 25-28mm scale.
We're currently using the Noble Armada floor plans (amongst others) and 25-28mm works fine.

Re: Miniatures
It would be interesting to use the Battle System scifi terrain to recreate the floor plans in 3d. It would pretty rad, and of course, that is all designed for 25-35mm.
