Miniatures

Postby Bertjammin » Mon Jul 07, 2014 8:33 am

Do any GMs use miniatures for their games?

Generally when gaming I will use them depending on the rule set. My son (one of my players) is higher functioning autistic/Aspergers and he finds them very useful to help visualise scenes and so I'm currently working on a set of character models for our cast of player characters. However I wondered how prevalent miniature use is and what miniatures, tokens or counters you might use?

I think I've only ever used minis in FS once, and that was for a combat aboard a starship. I think I used old WEG Star Wars miniatures. Another GM in my group frequently use RISK minis in fantasy games, especially for large combats, and that's been quite successful as well. Usually though, minis are not very common in the gaming groups I am involved in.

Currently for our game I'm using a lot of Games Workshop miniatures but I've got a varied collection that I've aquired over the years.
I'm converting figures to use for our player characters:

Sir Hemlock Justinian - GW Mordheim elf
Sir Hassimir Fenrig Torenson - GW Imperial Navy officer
Marquis De Havilland Hawkwood - GW Vostroyan First Born
Novitiate Joysay - GW Redemptionist Priest
Mr Lawrence of the Scravers Guild - Ral Partha Shadowrun Yakuza

I don't use miniatures due to the lack of having any and being to expensive to ship over here.
But I use lots of maps... lots and lots.
Combat, scenarios, you name it.

The Noble Armada, Shipdeck Plans are the best!!! =D
To hell with information, ammunition is ammunition.

If brute for ain't working you ain't using enough.

Map wise I use a variety of sources: Whizkids Heroclix maps, old Games Workshop "floor tiles" - including the ever useful set they did for their Judge Dredd rpg, Fiery Dragon's Starship tiles, WotC Star Wars miniatures maps and some of my son's collection of D&D maps.

Failing that a white board and dry wipe marker pens :)

I have some miniatures from a couple of the Reaper lines that I like to use. Hopefully sometime in the future FASA Games will be able to offer some new Fading Suns specific miniatures but the mists of time remain unrevealed to me right now. :)

I'd also recommend Alternative armies Ion Age miniatures

http://theionage.com/

I used to have a bunch of them the first time around but I'm pleased to see them back in production in 28mm...(and also in "God's own scale" - 15mm)

By the way I have been putting pictures of the miniatures we are using in our games on the campaign blog (check my signature for the URL).
