Hint1: The Shadow Sun is a personality of sorts...
Hint2: This is connected to one of the Ur-species (as ZeroJanvier guesses).

Yep, that is correct :) (CotG p.66)
This concept also beautifully parallels the antinomian concept of the Black Sun at the center of the Darkness Between the Stars, giving support to the conservative priest argument that the Ur-Ukar worship demons :D
