Is Pistola Useless?

Postby adimar » Thu Apr 16, 2015 11:45 am

Hi guys.
I'm looking at the firearms style Pistola and it feels kind of useless.
basically the entire style boils down too:
+3 initiative, ignore -2 penalties for quickdraw.
negate -2 penalty for multi-shots.
negate the -4 penalty for shooting on the run.

compare it to the Phoenix rifle corps:
+1 defense from cover and negate half cover penalties:
+2 goal (not penalty cancellation but true bonus)
add damage to knockback roll
and the ultimate wyrd instinct shot.

feels like there is no comparison especially when you consider the skills needed for rifle corps are a lot more benign than those that are the prerequisite for pistola.

What do you think?

I don't think Pistola is useless.
+3 to initiative is a quite nice bonus (who shoots first, kills first). also in this topic was a discussion about Roll and Shoot action making it slightly more cinematic. And finally, no penalties for shooting during move gives you very nice possibilities, for example you can shoot then run to get the cover, without any penalty to hit.

Pistola is very dynamic (fast draw, initiative bonus, move - related maneuvers), one of my players is using it and likes it very much. Note that pistol is much more handy than rifle and it's easier to conceal, so Pistola user can be a successful gunslinger (fast draw, initiative bonus) that can clear battlefield in few seconds (multiple shots with no penalty) and is always in the right position (move and hit with no penalty).

I hope not. I love using it in play. :)

I think a lot of it come down to the type and style of game. As Tupteq mentioned, for combat styles that are run and gun, with lots of movement and a bit more cinematic, I think Pistola fits the niche nicely. Granted, PRC could also fit in to that style of game as well but the "feel" I get from it is that it is a more militaristic combat training that focuses on superior firing position, and beating the snot out of anyone that gets too close (the crazy pistola guy).

I think too that each style has a place depending on game locations and how you handle weapons in your campaign. Pistols (other than hand cannons) are a bit easier to conceal and draw much less attention. A couple of heavily armed guys with battle rifles is going to draw some attention. That is good in some situations but other times might call for a bit more subtlety.

There has to be a best style. Phoenix Rifle isn't so dramatically better. And ultimately not everyone can be trained by an Imperial Drill Sergeant. If your character wasn't an Imperial Soldier or didn't have the 'birds to be trained like one, Pistola is a pretty useful style.
