I think that is a good and practical exercise. Go for it! (I have another Grail fief on ice that I will fix up for FSR and post in a couple of days or so).

Here's my last Grail fief, originally written for FS3 but adapted for FSR. This one was written specifically to be weird and unusual, and although it shows what strangeness there is room for in Fading Suns, it might not be as useful/usable as a on-the-spot location in your average game. Well, at least I hope it is interesting :) (Also, it is rather long...)

Overview: The Khree’Khree Barony is a rare House Keddah fief in that the Lord of the Realm is an Etyri – Baron Kite. Baron Kite was adopted into House Keddah in 4995 in recognition for his extraordinary service to that house the year prior (ultimately in service of House Keddah’s patron, House Decados), during the Final Battle of Byzantium Secundus. To mark his initiation into the ranks of Mankind (so to speak), he changed his name from his birth name Khree’Khree to Kite, an Urthish loanword he thought suited his character well. The arrangement has not been without its critics however, but nor is it without precedence. The newly ennobled Lord Kite was granted a fief in the Chirikiti Archipelagoes, a common hiding place for outcasts, pirates, and other societal dropouts fleeing Keddah rule. It is hoped that by establishing a domain in the heart of the archipelagoes, law and order might be restored here. Another incentive was to use the Khree’Khree Barony as a foothold on the archipelagos from which to establish further fiefs in the near future, thereby swelling the tax revenues of the House Keddah.

Relations: Lord Kite is now vassal to the continental Markiz (Marquis), who operates out of the Sangreal court of Sheikh Haroun Keddah, and the baron takes care to run his barony according to Human standards and traditions. The Khree’Khree Barony is a rich in natural bounty, heavily invested in the local fishing industry, and employing several tribes of maritime Etyri freemen to collect the bounty of the sea. No less than seven fishing communities (populated by Etyri freemen) dot the coastlines of the barony’s three islands, but that is not the extent of Baron Kite’s fishing empire. The realm’s darkest secret is the that the Lord keeps a tribe of flightless Tua’tahi Etyri (i.e. anthropomorphic penguin analogue) in bondage, using them to harvest the deeper oceans. The baron has established strong trade connections with neighboring fiefs on the continent. Baron Kite’s four sons, Caracara, Falco, Osprey, and Harrier, are receiving a military education on Malignatius, while his daughter, Aquila, is currently receiving courtly education on Severus. There is much pressure on the eldest of the nest-siblings, ne-Baron Osprey, to apply for acceptance into the ranks of the Questing Knights, for although this would disqualify him from inheriting the Khree’Khree barony, it would bring much prestige to his family as he would be the first Etyri knight to hold that office. To placate the Universal Church, Baron Kite has constructed a small chapel to St. Lextius on a hill near his manor, and hired a young Sanctuary Aeon priest, Mother Yemaja Orisha d’Togo, to run the parish. The Musters Guild has vested interest in the Khree’Khree Barony, being in charge of the fief security, the packing and transporting the fish harvests, and the Tua’tahi slave ring.

Description: Khree’Khree Barony lies in a temperate weather zone where life is pleasant and resources plentiful. The realm stretches across three mountainous jungle islands. The largest island, called Khree’Khree after the barony, houses the baron’s manor and four fishing communities. The second largest island is Ara’Kakt, about 1/3 the size of the Khree’Khree island and home the remaining three fishing communities. The smallest island is Tuk’Alit, which is officially uninhabited although the Musters’ Guild has established a base of operations for their soldiers here in addition to their slave ring. The baronial manor, as well as the largest fisher settlement (I’arahi), is located in a small fjord. A large and ugly pre-fab fish-processing factory is located in another fjord further south on Khree’Khree Island, to which the fish harvests are brought for packing and prepared for transportation. The island of Tuk’Alit is over-grown with jungle, but hides the high security Musters base and Tua’tahi slave camp in a deep unassuming fjord. The slave camp is concealed from the air by heavy foliage, although the hovercraft landing pad, communications masts, the hydropower facility to harness tidal currents, and the outer security fences are easy enough to spot from above. A continuous squawker message is broadcasted, proclaiming on all channels that: “You are now trespassing on Musters’ Guild property, bestowed by Baron Kite Keddah and governed by League law. Turn away immediately or risk injury or forfeiture of freedom.”

History: Up until 4995, the fief did not exist and constituted unclaimed land, often used by pirates and outlaws as temporary refuges. Since being assimilated into House Keddah, the Khree’Khree lands have suffered frequent raids by these groups. The baron has received some aid in dealing with this threat in the form of tax dispensation from House Keddah, allowing him to hire mercenaries from the Muster to counter these attacks. The migratory routes of many Etyri also pass through the archipelago, causing frictions with the Human interests that the Khree’Khree Barony represents. Neighboring Etyri aristocrats have begun arming themselves in case the humanized Baron Kite embrace that too familiar of humanity’s endeavors, conquest. Since Lord Kite’s ennobling into House Keddah, the Chirikiti Archipelagoes has become a very busy place. The fishing industry is booming, and outside investors adds to the development of these once pristine reserves. The Muster Guild operatives established their permanent operations here in 4998, while the slave camp was set up in 5000. Within a year, the Chainers filled the camp to capacity with hundreds of Tua’tahi slaves brought up from the south, and modest exports of these slaves to off-world markets began last year.

Baron Kite Keddah de Khree’Khree (born 4958): Baron Kite is a Huar’raughq (eagle-like) Etyri, tall and powerful in stature. After his adoption into House Keddah, Kite has made measures to humanize himself and his household, and has taken to wearing conservative noble attire and speaking with an overdone Keddah accent. Like many converts, Baron Kite has adopted Human philosophies and conduct with such passion that he has become more ‘human’ than most true Humans. He has even adopted some less celebrated human qualities and is now strongly critical of non-Etyri aliens whom he regards as lazy and inferior. Baron Kite is vocal in his critique of House Juandaastas and their pro-alien ways. Assuming Human ambition, he is looking into all manner of business models and endeavors, with the aim to expand his realm.

Baroness Ravna de Khree’Khree – Lady of the Seeing (born 4957): Ravna is Baron Kite’s life-mate, and like her ‘husband’ she has taken an Urthish loanword as a name. Her given name was A’heeyah-yah-yee, and her adopted name means Raven in some Urthish dialects. That she is subservient to her husband is quite rare for an Etyri couple, for Etyri society is highly matriarchal. But it suits Ravna fine that her husband rules the fief, for that gives her time to focus on her true calling, Oberiomancy (or ‘Death Gaze’). Lady Ravna is beginning to suspect that joining House Keddah was a mistake however, as she finds her prophetic counsel increasingly shunned by her husband’s subjects. Many Khree’Khree serfs strive for humanization just like their baron, and consequently the Universal Faith is gaining ground on the traditional Etyri religious practices, objecting to Ravna’s work in entrails of the dead.

Mother Yemaja Orisha d’Togo (born 4983): Mother Yemaja is a young ebony beauty who looks out-of-place in her priestly garbs. She completed her seminary just last year and was very grateful when her superiors assigned her a Keddah parish of her own to administer shortly after graduation. A great opportunity to be sure! Now, she is not so sure, for although the Etyri are polite and respectful, most do not attend her services and she feels ignored. Mother Yemaja also suspects that something is amiss in the barony. She can’t quite put her finger to it, but there are strange people and wares passing through the fief, and a veil of secrecy hangs over it. The Muster Captain Vaclav is pleasant enough though, but she is convinced that some unwholesome business is going on between the guilders and the baron. Mother Yemaja also objects to the vile goings-on up in the manor, where the Lady of the Seeing practices her deathly ceremonies, with her pet skells scavenger birds by her side. Yemaja increasingly fear that the rumors about the baroness being an antinomist could be true. The young Mother Yemaja, her flock consisting of a handful of faithful converts, has taken up spying as a hobby, hoping to piece together what is going on in Barony Khree’Khree. It has become her focus and her calling to aright the wrongs in Khree’Khree.

Captain Vaclav Svoboda of Gwynneth (born 4974): Vaclav is a career Muster, following in the footsteps of more ancestors than he could care to count. He is tall and handsome, with masculine features and a pale complexion, and he looks striking in his uniform. Growing up on Gwynneth, in a Muster security franchise colony, but received his training on Bannockburn, upon graduationVaclav sought to travel the Phoenix Empire and took any job that would bring him to a new planet. When the Musters Guild sought to establish an operation in the Khree’Khree Barony in 1998, Vaclav, then a newly promoted Captain, traveled to Grail to establish himself in this burgeoning economy. He soon took over the operations in the Khree’Khree barony from the former Captain Deek De Smet, who sought to retire from active service. Vaclav quickly found his place here and has since improved and expanded the operations considerably. But lately things have not been so easy, for Captain Vaclav has a secret weakness. Much against his wishes, he has found himself infatuated by the young Mother Yemaja, his perhaps most dangerous adversary in the Khree’Khree Barony. Vaclav has cautiously approached Yemaja a couple of times and found her easy to talk to, even though she is suspicious of the guild’s operations within her parish. In time she might come to appreciate him and his work more, especially if something were to threaten the Barony. And if she refuse to come around? Well, there are other ways to acquire the girl’s company…

Asset: Khree’Khree generates an annual 3000 firebirds surplus.

Men-at-Arms (8 Etyri + 45 Musters soldiers): Baron Kite has only eight Etyri soldiers on his payroll, called the AirGuard, most of them veterans of the Emperor Wars. They wear specially fitted, very expensive Synthsilk fatigues for armor – light enough that it doesn’t interfere with flight, and the Keddah heraldry proudly displayed in bold colors. The AirGuard used to carry rather plain Manfeed Hunting Rifles, but last year Baron Kite invested a year’s worth of profit to buying a case of ten Veteran model Imperial Rifles for his force, as well as a dozen Phoenix Handguns, and ammunition. The AirGuard sees a fair amount of combat, conducting regular aerial patrols to safeguard the fief against raids by pirates and outlaws. For the most part, however, security in the barony is contracted to the Musters’. The AirGuard respects the Musters, and they are aware of the “labor colony” to the south but care little about the primitive Tua’tahi savages? The Musters soldiers are very well equipped, sporting Muster Rover Autofeed rifles, Krosler Dunehound Medium Autofeed pistols, Vibro-daggers, Flash-bang grenades, Polymer knit armors, Camouflage Ponchos (+2 Sneak), Low-Light goggles, squawkers, MedPacks, Muster Chains, and an assortment of personal gear.

Using Baron Kite as a patron: Baron Kite has his fingers in a great many pies, and he is always on the lookout for competent helpers and bold investors. He is toying with the idea of forming a treasure hunting team to investigate the ruins of Grail, or forming a hunting party to bring down some of the world’s more spectacular wildlife. In time, his eldest son Osprey might need a capable retinue, and Baron Kite is always thinking ahead. Captain Vaclav and his Muster guilders slowly expand their influence on his realm, and although Baron Kite appreciates the work they do for him, hiring someone to keep an eye on them and their businesses can’t do any harm. And finally, his Etyri neighbors are now shunning Lord Kite, and some of them are even arming themselves above and beyond what is needed to protect their fiefs. The baron would very much like to know what is happening on the mainland, to gather intelligence in case he needs to strike first to prevent his former allies rising up against him.

Using Baron Kite as an adversary: Success breeds suspicion and contempt, and Baron Kite’s mounting wealth and rapid financial expansion has left some to wonder just what is going on in the Khree’Khree Barony. Reeves financiers are starting to ask questions, and would like to send agents to investigate the barony – preferably outsiders whom they can wash their hands of should dirt be unearthed. Also, Sanctuary Aeon authorities are growing curious over the resident parish priest, Mother Yemaja, rambling reports. Perhaps the young priestess is just lonely, but it might be worth investigating, especially the incredible claims that an “alien antinomist is at work in the Khree’Khree Barony”. And finally, some traditionalist Keddah nobles are complaining about the house allowing an alien to rule a Keddah fief, especially one so prosperous. Perhaps it would be better for all involved if a proper Keddah landowner took over the fief, through political maneuvering and/or martial force? In any case, political support must be raised for such a venture, and military intelligence acquired through overt or covert means, or both.

Ka’nense Valley Barony

Overview: The Ka’nense Valley is a nearly six hundred year old Juandaastas fief on Kordeth, the oldest independent barony on the world. It acts as an Ukari crossroads between the Ukari Holy City to the north and three small guild mining domes to the south. The Juandaastas facilitation of this trade between the Ukari, al Malik, and the League representatives is vital to trade across the region.

Relations: The Juandaastas are experts in maintaining good relations between themselves and their neighbors. The Rhodes Barons have proven they are no different in that respect. The Baron Rhodes are loyal to the Marquessa Juandaastas of Criticorum. They have intermarried frequently with other Juandaastas, the al-Malik, the Hawkwood, and a number of other minor houses.
The Rhodes branch of the Juandaastas are acknowledged experts in negotiating with the minor Ukari clans that surround their small barony. The Rhodes Juandaastas’s long history on Kordeth and preference for working with with minor clans has left them favored in the eyes of the Allied Clans and the Nadakira. The house has stood in opposition to the Allied Clans in the past, however these periods are usually followed by a shift in the AC leadership.
Relations with the League have traditionally been fair and balanced. Lately relations have been more strained as Baron Titus Rhodes has taken a stance on Guilds mining ambitions close to the northern habitable regions. While this has not yet affected existing contracts with the Guilds he stands practically alone on this matter outside of the outlaw clans and the Nadakira.
Juandaastas also maintain close relations with the local al-Malik. al-Malik nobles constitutes nearly the entire noble population of Kordeth. Being the only diversity available at local social events has led the Rhodes to be invited to any gathering held on Kordeth. This does not mean they are fully trusted by the al-Malik, just respected.
The Church has had little luck in converting Ukari to the faith in the Ka’nense Valley and they have viewed the Rhodes Juandaastas with significant distrust in the past regardless of their numerous local overtures to the church. For their part the family has done much to support the local church, Saint Ostrein’s Under-the-Dome, using the church as a facilitator of support to the inhabitants of the fief.

Description: The Ka’nense Valley is located halfway between Mount Shadderik and the equatorial league city of Norman. The “Valley” is actually a volvanicly created gorge 4 miles long, three quarters of a mile wide and more then a mile deep in area’s. The entirety is covered by a thick quartz dome constructed using salvaged 2nd Republic nanotech. The north eastern end of the gorge is home to the manor.
The Ventor Manor was constructed from the salvaged remains of second republic starships and looks the part. Stretching out from the walls of the valley it appears as the prow of a ship with shimmering metal sides stretching almost to the roof of the dome. The power reactor, environmental systems and access to the small flitter hanger and land crawlers are built into the south wall near the Manor. Two human villages are located at the feet of the palace (Ventor; pop. 3,000) and the high western region of the valley (Kollman; pop. 5,000).
St. Ostrein’s Church complex is located in the Kollman community. Donated to and expanded many times over the centuries by various members of the Rhodes family; the Orthodox church contains a number of offshoot chapels and annexes that are used by the Rhodes to provide for their local inhabitants. The highlands under the dome are home to fifteen human run farms.
A cluster of human buildings also exists in the shadows of the gorge where the lower portions of the gorge are sectioned off from the Ukari villages by security stations. This community is the center of trade between the Ukari and human communities but numbers less than two dozen full time inhabitants.
Se’Rue Rhe (pop. 15,000 Ukari) lies just below the security gates. The Ukari village contains a mixture of minor clans each of whom live on separate family platforms stitched into the sidewalls of the valley. The web of platforms are interlinked by walking platforms and cliff side paths.
Near the bottom of the valley, just above a small lake, lies a tunnel that was begun in the rein of Baron Ventor to link the valley to a subterranean highway in the Akta Natlin which connects the valley to the northern habitable lands and the guild cities to the south.
History: The Ka’nense Valley was an uninhabitable wasteland until it was domed using salvaged 2nd Republic Nanotech by famed adventurer Baron Ventor Rhodes Juandaastas in 4475. When the 1st Baron Rhodes died in 4552 he left behind a large family, a strong and strong fief.
The Barons and Baronesses Rhodes have been quite prodigious in their progeny. Numerous younger, illegitimate, and wayward children of the family have gone off to become fames adventurers, regency diplomats, and have married into most of the noble houses.
Among the Rhodes whom have stayed on Kordeth they tend to become diplomats(The Rhodes have been involved almost every major Noble / Guild / Ukari Treaty in the last five century’s) or Financier/Traders (The Reeve San-Reim’s family based in Darurgin has had five Rhodes marry into the family in the last three centuries).
Due to their relative isolation on Kordeth, the Baron’s Rhodes have developed a reputation among their off world brethren as being prone towards use of force to ensure peace. This may be rumor or it may have to do with ruling a fief on an Ukari world.

Assets: Annual income for the barony can range from 4,000 to 16,000 credits per year. The two major factors account for the disparity in income. The first is the level of toll income from trade between the mines to the equatorial regions and the Ukari North that shifts based on the stability of relations between the Ukari and the League. The second is the cost to up keep atmospheric filters and power plant can be quite unpredictable.
The Barony is over 400 years old. It has had 16 reigning barons(esses) over its existence; each gathering wealth an accumulating a wide assortment of oddities and trinkets thru time.

Men-at-Arms: The Baron maintains a rather substantial police force and an Ukuari enforcement. The Barons House Guard consists of twelve (12) gaurds under Treve Litell. The guard wear metal studded leather jerkins and is armed with an Ukari forged saber and a heavy revolver (“Cogun” Heavy’s) Four (4) Constables maintain order in the human sector of the city, they are assisted by four (4) gate guards who control passage between the human and Ukari quarters. (Both are equipped with dirks and a light revolver.) An additional twenty to thirty humans can be armed on short notice should rioting occur in the Ukari town below with wall shields and spears. The Baron also maintains a dozen old rifles in his residence should things come to that.
He also commands an Ukari force of forty constables who maintain order in the lower village and gather trade tolls from passing caravans. The Ukari are armed with a vast assortment of local bladed weapons as well as a few light to medium firearms (No known count as it is technically illegal for them to own.).

Personas:
Baron Ventor IV Rhodes Juandaastas (b. 4926): The elder baron Rhodes is still alive but has been in seclusion for over a decade. He is said to suffer from extended bouts of dementia and violent emotional episodes. He married Lady Juwel Juandastas, Titus’s mother, in 4956, only to lose her in the crossfire of the Emperor Wars in 4962. His second wife, the Annabelle VanGelder, passed away over fifteen years ago leaving him with son and daughter from that marriage. He also had two children outside of marriage; one son (Stephen DeSaros-Rhodes) with a Charioteer women prior to Titus’s mother and one daughter (Bianca Rhodes) to a concubine between marriages.

Baron Titus Rhodes Juandaastas (b. 4958): The Baron Titus Rhodes Juandaastas is the current reining Baron Rhodes. This position was thrust on him soon after his step mother’s death. He has brought in numerous doctors to determine the source of the dementia but its cause has brought him constant concern.
Titus is a well educated man in his early fifty’s with short cut rust colored hair and a razor thin mustache. Educated by high quality tutors in his youth on the estate and widely travelled in his teens, prior to the major fighting of the Emperor wars, he is a savy individual who

Baroness Eliza Clarre Juandaastas (b. 4963): Eliza was born the second child of a Justinian Knight and a Hawkwood Baroness in her mother’s Barony on Austram East. She left that world with the young Cassandra Hawkwoods entourage as they visited various Hawkwood worlds. It was during a reception on Vesimil that she met Titus Rhodes Juandaastas and the two began a long distance courtship. Eliza’s elder sister is a Baroness under the Countess Cassandra Hawkwood and is deeply interested in any news of the war between the islands.
She and Titus have two young daughters Sicil (b. 4989)and Clarre (b. 4990). Both are undergoing extended tutoring at home. Eliza is attempting to have them tutored for periods in off world courts of Delphi, Gwenneth

Bianca Rhodes (b. 4964): Bianca has always been close to her father. She was showered with opportunity and assigned the same tutors as her older brother. A bright student she showed promise in the sciences; leading her father to hire various passing Guildsmen to tutor her in her late teens. She left Kordeth to attend an academy on Criticorum for a number of years before returning. She has since opened up a chemists shop near St. Ostrein’s collecting and selling Ukari medicines as well as supplying the community’s local needs.
She has been a constant supporter of her half-brother the Baron and is still a favorite of the elder baron during his lucid periods.

Sir Serge Juandaastas (b. 4981): Serge has been actively courting the daughter of a Kordeth based al-Malik Baron for the last four years. The young lady’s father opposes the marriage but has been wearing down as no other marriage offers arise. Serge is a rather plain looking lanky man who has shown great reluctance to choose an occupation.

Lady Dellinia Juandaastas (b. 4983): Dellinia is a fixture of the Kordeth social scene. She is a social butterfly who appears to flit daintily from social circle to social circle. Rumors abound about her behavior outside high society social circles. Some of the rumors of her after hours activities are currently the talk of many al-Malik nobles. She has proven herself quite useful to the Rhodes clan in documenting her relations with nobles and guildsmen alike.

Stephen DeSaros-Rhodes (b. 4955): The elder half brother of Titus is a Charioteer and has only recently begun to visit the estate after a twenty five year absence. His mother and father fell out in the years after his birth and he visited rarely, until recently when Titus contacted him to reconcile him with his father prior to his death. Stephen is now a captain of his own vessel making runs along the Kordeth – Alyon – Leminkainen route. His long bitterness with his father has greatly subsided and his relations with Titus are outwardly cordial. Even his inner resentment to his brother fades as he is granted increasing numbers of trade contracts transporting Ukari goods.
Adventure Idea’s:

Baron Titus Rhodes Juandaastas as a patron: The barony is constantly looking for technical equipment to keep it itself running; reactor parts, air filtration equipment, and mining equipment. He try’s to keep the Scavers at arm’s length and often looks to landless nobles as intermediary’s between himself and that guild. More than once he and his father have used these nobles to search for clues surrounding the events that lead to his mother’s death near Gwynneth forty years ago.

Baron Titus Rhodes Juandaastas as an adversary: Titus has become the protector of his little clan, should anyone of his siblings become entangled in intrigues or trouble he will come to the rescue.

The Favored Sister: Bianca Rhodes has taken on a role left to her by her stepmother Annabelle VanGelder in supplying Ukari anti-poisons and medicines to VanGelder agents. In return she has been receiving various known world medicines and a healthy supply of firebirds. She has been very careful to hide her involvement from her father and brother feeling that while they would disapprove she is doing no harm.

When a courier fumbles an exchange during a banquet; Titus engages the characters to track down the Van Gelder agent, destroy any evidence of his step-sisters misdoings, and shut down the ring. Titus can’t do anything to assist himself (to avoid scandal) and they must ensure that Serge’s fiancé’s father hears nothing of these events.

This was a nice fief, full of good ideas and fresh concepts. I particularly like the grounded starship converted into a palace, and the ukary town in the side of the mountain is nice. Good work! :D

Bertjammin; Deep Core 104 Sector 42 was a great writeup on a very different type of fief. Nice work and congrats on keeping it relevant and concise. (Something I need to work on given the length of my work-up.)

Thanks Amlost :) - It's a fief I've lifted from my current game and embellished a little. One of our players is the heir to it but, like his parents' he's rarely visited it. I look forward to the eventually storyline when that changes.... ;)

The Mistlands of Nunaat

Overview: The Baronet Izyaslav Barchet Decados was appointed as the Lord of the Mistlands by Duchess Valentina Decados in the wake of the Decados takeover of Malignatus. He strains under the pressure to keep his master appeased, his fief clear of brigands, and his finances in the black.
The Mistlands region lies northeast of New Jakovograd consisting of little more then snow covered ragged hills, rocky coastline, small rivers, and seasonal farms. Provided with ample cover by natural weather phenomena roving bands of brigands and fugitives from across Nunaat actively come here for refuge. The region is well known for being a hideout for brigands, mercenaries, smugglers, and freelancers looking to avoid “higher” authorities.

Relations: Izyaslav Barchet is technically a vassal Countess Elena Romanov Decados, a favored half sister to the Duchess, who said to be a mentally unstable psychic seer. Izyaslav actively avoids her unless absolutely necessary. Luckily she never calls her vassals to court instead relying on her crippled seneschal and various couriers to do her bidding. He is deeply distrustful of his peers amongst the Countesses court. He views them as competitors for power and gifted with the good graces of their Lady.
To the south of the Mistlands lie various fiefs that pay homage directly to the Duchess Valentina and while no more trusting Izyslav is far more willing to work with them and has actually managed to cultivate successful trade relationships with them. He consults with these lords on a regular basis resulting in better trade and military coordination.

Guild relations are limited in this remote fief. Minor guilds control most commerce in the fleet and Izyslav is very accommodating to their needs. The Fishers, Haulers, Brewers, Wranglers, and Purgers Guilds are all influential well connected guildsmen. The Charioteer aligned Haulers Guild have regular runs to the villages along the coast and limited dirigible flights to the villages of the interior. Engineers, Muster, and Reeves are rare visitors to this area whose very presence is subject to local rumor. The Scavers are another matter, their presence in the Mistland’s is greeted either with great enthusiasm or mistrust (often both). Scavers arriving here can expect to be taken for every firebird to their name and subsequently thrown back to the authorities.

The church has a small presence here focused primarily on retaining the Orthodox Church as it exists. Bishop Markom Rexnore oversees the local parishes and those of the Rogeress Barony to the West.
Description: Two hundred eighty miles of shoreline and up to one hundred ninety miles in depth the Lord of the Mistlands controls a substantial if sparsely populated fief. For reasons unknown or forgotten since the fall the Mistlands are covered in deep fogs most of the year.
Seasonally arable lands are located throughout the area, the most populated lie along the rivers and streams near the coast. Three fishing villages (Xianfe, Anglai, and Kerhou) are located on the coast each with populations between 400 – 900 inhabitants. The only other town is to be found deep in the western the interior called Kiryakova. Kiryakova’s population is seasonal ranging from 2,800 inhabitants during the summers when woodmen’s use the town as a hub and 800 during the fierce winters.
Various communities (up to 200 inhabitants) are located throughout the interior of the fief. These are little patrolled, pay only a minimal tax to the lord, and whose loyalty to the Church, Empire, and House Decados is frequently questioned.

A small Vorox community has established a village in the rural north east of the fief. The Baron has yet to establish good relations with the elders but they have proven to be a civilized group and intolerant of outsiders. Until he is better able to influence this small tribe the Baron has seen it prudent to leave them unhindered.

The road from New Jakovgrad, formerly Pinkiang, runs north thru this fief to the northern enclave of Bistami (County Seat of Elena Decados). All other serviceable roads link to the Pinkiang- Bistami Road. A Li Halan built railway that runs parallel to the road but been out of service since the conquest. Elena and Valentina have proposed to reopen the railroad on numerous occasions but have produced only minimal funds for the project.

The Baronet’s Estate, Fyodor Manor, overlooks the junction in the road that breaks West towards the town of Kiryakova. Reconstructing the old sheriff’s bailey into a defensible manor suitable for the Baron has been an expensive endeavor that has taken the Baronet a decade to construct. Built around a 2nd Republic maxicrete weatherstation (one of hundreds scattered across Malignatus) the Manor has been transformed into a towerhouse and casemate barracks.

History: The fief is newly invented, having been broken off from the greater Ducal domains when the Decados assumed leadership of the region. During Li Halon rule the region was a managed by a variety of non-noble landholders, sheriffs, and tax-collectors. The duke controlled this area with considerable effort to ensure the security of the cities to the south. The centuries since the fall of the 2nd Republic the Mistlands have been restless lands much travelled but little settled.

Assets: The fief has run at a deficit for the last few years. The costs of operating his military forces, keeping the peace with neighboring fiefs, maintaining his wife, and updating his manor have until recently kept the Baronet destitute. He is expecting a 1,200 FB income this year foreseeing no unanticipated expenses.

Men-at-Arms: Twelve sheriffs armed with hunting rifles have been appointed to maintain order and collect taxes across the wide ranging fief. In a time of war or emergency the Baron could wrangle up 200 militia from his fief. Armory’s containing various polearms are maintained in the sheriff’s stations of Xianfe, Anglai, and Kerhou.
The Barons personal guard consists of a strike force of 40 men at arms for strategic strikes and military operations within his fief. They operate out of the Barons Towerhouse and are armed with assault rifles, light revolvers, and steel blades.

Personas:

Baronet Izyaslav Barchet Decados: Izyaslav was raised within the walls of the Svanfeld Estates (Glevum, Murciyah, Cadavus) surrounded by and tutored alongside the scions of the Svanfeld and Romanov branches of the family. He was once a person to whom a refined standard of living, higher learning, and etiquette came easily. That changed when he became part of the conquest of Malignatus. He proved competent but not exemplary in his efforts during the war not impressing or disappointing his superiors. He was granted the title Lord of the Mistlands (supposedly) as a gift for his services. It has since drained him of his financial resources. He has been forced by the necessities of his fief to become a militant despot. Izyaslav was never a military strategist but is an intelligent leader of his men. Unable to adequately patrol his fief he is often called upon to root out bands of brigands and hunt down criminals at the request of neighboring Lords. He has begun to take pride and pleasure in leading these war parties.

Dame Lydian Juris Decados: Izyaslav and Lydian live separate lives. Lydian despises the lands appointed to her husband and instead of transferring to them, has established herself in a townhouse in New Jakovgrad. From her abode she courts favor from other minor visiting lords and ladies, often at the expense of her husband, for her own purposes. On the rare occasions Izyaslav visits the townhouse on state business, the two have an outwardly cordial relationship.

Capitan Youst Dunna: Capitan of the Guard of Mistlands and Chief of the Svanfeld Walls, Youst Dunna is of dark complexion, squarely built, and muscular man. He travels far more than his lord and is given free use of the Baronet’s lone hoverbike. Capitan Dunna acts as the primary messenger between the Mistlands, New Jakovgrad, and Bistami.

Kang Lun Sufus“The Fence”: Kang is a Scaver of some renown, having operated here for over thirty years. He is the leading guild member of the fief, operating out of Xianfe he controls trade into and out of the region, as such is the largest tax payer in the fief. His side business is the sale of illegally obtained goods shipped in on a regular basis into Xianfe’s harbor. It is rumored that he is richer and more powerful then the Baronet. A recent power struggle between the Charioteers and the Muster has led to him taking over leadership of the local Shipping Guild. This unusual situation has led to considerable tensions between the guilds.

Countess Elena Romanov Decados: Even in perpetual absence the Countess is a specter that hangs over the inhabitants of the fief. She is feared and the words of her underlings are never ignored. In appearance Elena is a tall lithe women with dark hair and complexion. Elena is a cunning and harsh mistress as numerous vassals and servants would attest.
She and her sister had an interesting upbringing, Elena’s psychic abilities showed early and the sisters were isolated with very special tutors. The two were isolated with some of the Decados’s leading psychics thru their teens; destined to play integral parts in the Emperor Wars with Valentina the Warrior and Elena the Seer. Unfortunately Elena’s visions while accurate proved less useful then her sisters fighting ability.

Adventure Idea’s:

Izyaslav Barchet as a patron: Hide out in Izyaslav’s fief and expect that he and his team will come looking for you should your head have a price on it. Unless, of course, you pay him well. Using Kang Lun Sufus as an intermediary the players may be able to negotiate safe harbor within the confines of the fief. They will need to pay a pretty sum and keep out of trouble, but for coin he would likely keep your presence quite. However if discovered within the confines of his fief; he will hunt you down himself for the honors from his lieges.

Izyaslav Barchet as an adversary: Dame Lydian has made a land grant to a player or a players patron without the “full” agreement of her husband. In an attempt to pull a piece of salvaged tech from the ground they are harassed and sabotaged the endeavor into a singular course of retreat, one that is a trap constructed to ensnare the players in Izyaslav’s carefully constructed trap.

Again, brilliant work, Amlost! You write very grounded and mundane (in the positive sense of the word) fiefs, which should be very easy to implement in an ongoing game while still offering much food for thought and inspiration. Keep it up! :D
