Now I know what troubles you and its simple really. As for Per/Awareness tests. You can use Awareness only when actively looking for something, so if they look for hidden threats its ok, but if they look for secret doors - they must use Per to spot ambushes. I only let each player to test once Per/Awareness in case of ambushes. Both your 2 Per tests are the same one (normal one and one from Ambush rules). Actively looking lets them use Awareness. They are heroes they are always careful.
I let them test more than once if they are moving slowly or ambusher waits for them to get closer (got no bow), or does something stupid like chasing away a bee (conditions change - they got chance to see movement).
You treat traps as combatants and they are not. In your example PC tests Ini two times in the first round. One to avoid trap (can use Danger Sense) and it does only that, it works a bit like Avoid Blow but for traps "attacks". And second is to determine PC Ini for entire round but versus combatants only, dont use Traps Ini to see when it "acts" - it works when its triggered.
So in more complicated example lets use 1 PC, 1 Orc poacher, 3 traps. Your example from above but only 1 PC:
PC failing Per/Awa test (one for Orc and one for each trap he can see - or in case high roll one for all traps).
PC walked by one trap so Orc and 2 traps are in front and one trap behind our PC.
Orc decides to shoot (Ini test = 7).
PC makes Danger Sense as he has it at rank 2 he gets 20m danger "radar" (12 = success), now sees Orc. Rolls Initiative (17, way above Orc)
PC is first. He chooses to run (got some valuable painting in his hands
)
He triggers trap that was behind him, now he tests Ini/DS vs Trap Ini (traps Ini = 3 but it works now when triggered - it simply shows how hard to avoid it, PC rolls 28 but result only means if he is snared).
Than he changes his mind, drops painting and goes to kick Orcs butt (all in the same round), he triggers one of the 2 traps between him and Orc - again he tests Ini/DS (its result only means if he is snared), he is fast/snares are poorly made and he triggers last trap - again he test Ini/DS (its result only means if he is snared).
Finaly he gets under Orc sitting on the tree.
PC tested Ini 4 times in this one round. 1 to see when he acts in combat, and 3 to dodge traps.
