Hiya,

Check out Astral Imprints, ED3 PG, p.109 (EDR PG, p.156). Specifically, the 4th paragraph. :)

Short answer: The earth has a living imprint; astral beings cannot penetrate through ground level in astral space.

The "living earth" is considered a "living pattern" (ED3 Player's Guide, p 109, thus, not able to be passed through... it also notes that the "twilight" of astral space is the living planet glowing slightly. Note that magical items also have "living" patterns, I consider the difference to be the amount of mana cycling through the pattern). Constructed/worked structures or items are considered "non-living patterns" until Named.

Living creatures all have substance in astral space. Since the earth is considered alive as well as living trees and plants, they have astral substance and cannot be seen/passed through. Whereas loose stone, gravel and the like can be walked through since its lost its connection to the earth. Also dead wood no longer has an astral imprint, so the log cabin can simply be walked and seen through in astral space.

The best way to think of it is that nonmagical and nonliving items do not have astral presence whereas magical and living ones do.

I think it is often confused, imprint is not pattern
Stable pattern needs a name otherwise nothing defines (or closes you could say) the energetic structure.
Imprint is just reaction of astral space to presence of object (or entiti) in physical plane - it based on nature of twin worlds, astral/material.
Imprint is like a shadow of thing or little "denser" energy .
More to say, things can have both or only of of the 2. magic sword or a person have both imprints and patterns , wooden spoon would only have imprint, while spell cast in astral space and affecting astral space would only have pattern ( unles some kind of manifestation of the spells efect would have imprint).

Living stone and earth shares the pattern with the entire earth. Cut stone doesn't. A living tree has a pattern, a log cabin doesn't.
