being a non-adept

I'm using an NPC, an elf double-agent, assassin, who is not an adept. I like using non-adepts (ocassionally with high skills to circumvent the problem of the rarity of high circle opponents).

Now I would very much welcome some ideas, that why it is beneficiary for this double-agent to not be an adept. Is there any?

People can spot you're an adept via astral perception.
More specifically, for an assassin, the house of a mark could be guarded by traps, creatures, spirits, or anchored spells that detect adepts. Especially these sneaky Thieves and Scouts and Woodsmen who can just sneak past everybody and slit your throat while you're sleeping.
Downside is if there's magical traps, you can't deal with them.
If it is a long term engagement, however, you could more easily get a place on the house staff, because you're not a dangerous adept.

arma, u r amazing, thanks.

how can the adeptness be spotted by the game rules? how long the true pattern should be examined, and what DN? what r the guidelines for that?

I can’t see being a non adept as an advantage for an assassin, never seen an ability to detect if somebody is an adept, this doesn’t mean somebody who is not an adept cannot gain other advantages.

The biggest disadvantage to being a non adept is you can’t last in a stand up fight. You lack durability and skills such as parry are inferior to the talents that protect adepts. Assassins typically don’t go in for stand up fights anyway so this disadvantage is minor.

Poison and attacks with surprise are key. You won’t be able to kill an adept with a single stroke, even if he is asleep but with the right poison on your blade, or in his food you could hope to incapacitate him long enough to finish the kill.

Let's not forget, not everyone can be an adept. Some people seek the greatness, but they are unable to become adepts. They may not become the best, but they can become pretty great in their own right.

For "adept or non-adept?", it's just seeing the imprint. ("True to Form" last paragraph.)
For "what Discipline?" or something similar, it would be analyzing the pattern e.g. Spell Defense and upwards. ("Using Astral Sensing")
