Versatility, Spellcasting, Threadweaving, and Matrices

Postby TheQuicksilver » Wed Jan 04, 2012 8:41 pm

One of my players wants to take Wizard weaving and spellcasting via his versatility (assuming he can find a wizard willing to teach him outside the discipline). The question is what about taking spell matrices via versatility? Is that even possible? I'd read in 2nd Ed. matrices were discipline specific. Not sure I really like that idea as it was presented. I'm tempted to make him take matrices via items only, under the rationale that outside spellcasting disciplines, "learning" a spell matrix simply isn't possible (rather than saying matrices are discipline specific). Otherwise, it would seem a human spellcaster could take a nearly unlimited number of spell matrices from other disciplines. Thoughts?

i remember from a previous post that not matters how many disciplines you take (like for example a namegiver that is going illusionist/wizard/nethermancer/elementalist) but there is a definite number of matrices you can have (that is a max number of matrices, not mattering how many "options" and "discipline matrices" you can possibly reach.
And that should be the max amount given by 1 single spellcasting discipline (so you have to share the different discipline's spells in the same amount of matrices)
Ehm, dont know if was clear or not..

In all editions of ED (except ED2) Spell Matrix is not Discipline-specific -- so if the character gets Spell Matrices from his regular Discipline, he can't take them under Versatility.

Edit: And generally, limiting the number of matrices you can take under Versatility (if the Discipline doesn't normally get them) to the maximum number allowed under any one caster Discipline is a pretty sensible restriction.

Indeed, the p. 134/135 rules; FYI for those who don't want to compare: The maximum number is mostly 1 higher than what you can learn from 1 Discipline. The limit applies to all cases of learning talent-matrices, e.g. whether it is multiple Disciplines, a single Discipline with Versatility-learned matrices, or Versatility-learned Matrices only. It doesn't apply to anything gained via items, because the item supports the pattern, not the adept.
Best kaer anywhere.
