In the 3rd Edition Gamemaster's Guide it has two different mechanics for deception:
1. Deceit: Char trying to deceive rolls Charisma vs Target's Social Defense
2. Insight (Detect Deception): Char trying to detect if she is being deceived rolls Charisma vs Target's Social Defense
How does this work? Seems like one of these is a bit redundant. Which one of these do you fellow EDers use? Or do you use both somehow?
I was thinking of houseruling it so it plays more like a Charisma attack and parry scenario.
Example: Joro the scumbag Thief is trying to convince a guard in Throal that he is a Dwarf noble. Joro rolls his Charisma against the guard's Social Defense (Joro is a attempting a Fabrication so he needs a Good success). Joro gets an Excellent Success However the guard is always looking for people trying to fool their way past, so he makes an Insight: Detect Deception Test against Joro's roll. If the guard beats Joro's roll, he realises the thief is really a scumbag.

Player characters always make the roll (deceit if they are lying, insight if they are lied to).
