I never really had a problem with losing the LP's on something like this. The way I see it, it's either a case of poor advancement planning, in which case you're just stuck paying for the less efficient route, or it's a case of altered choice through role playing, in which case I view it more as just a cost of doing business, just as how I view paying LP's for karma and things like that. Just to note, in the latter case, that would most likely involve character developlment that would be worth enough LP's over time to have at least partially made up the difference.
In the end, of course, it's all a matter of play styles and preferences.

I suppose, but I don't consider advancement planning a fun part of the game. It's already the case that certain choices are more or less efficient than others. This is inevitable when you have a lot of options, because it is nearly impossible to have all their benefits and trade-offs perfectly balanced across the board. This is the price of flexibility, and I am fine with it provided the imbalance is kept within tolerance, which most games seem to manage. But adding LP penalties on top of that seems unnecessary.
