Infected is a first edition adventure that focuses on the PCs coming across a village quarantined by the Grim Legion because a young girl is displaying unusual powers. They suspect Horrors.

The source of the powers is actually an artifact called the Book of Blue Spirits, which collapses to dust if the PCs remove it from the cave it is located in. Book Memory could (in theory) be used to save the knowledge the book contains.

The adventure kicks off one thread of the "dragons behind the scenes" metaplot of the early Earthdawn line.

If you're interested, the original adventure is , and was also included in the , which collects five first-edition adventures into a single volume (and includes Blades, probably the archetype for campaigns based around a magic item).

Maybe not a knowledge skill, but the wizard should totally be able to make research tests against the books she has memorized. About to head down the Serpent? Memorize a book about t'skrang culture. Heading out to provide reinforcements for a village against scorcher incursion? Memorize a book about effective defensive structures.

Also, this is not in the rules at all, but I would allow certain skills to be raised by reading the right book, perhaps with a perception test involved. Furthermore, I would be open to a memorized book representing a Knowledge skill of +1 or +2, although requiring a full round action to access. I can't imagine that would break anyone's game.

Also - grimoires aren't necessarily books. Could you book memorize the chain of skulls?

Oh - I thought but did not say - a given book would have a maximum rank, 1 or 2 or possibly 3. It wouldn't be able to increase past it's maximum rank - usually only rank 1. It wouldn't affect an existing higher skill rank.
