make them all major pattern items then have one Rank Three thread attached that adds +3 to all the Defenses at each of the lairs. You cannot forget about the Elementalist's Second Circle spell of Flame Strike, which has nasty damage and no threads. Ice Spear is nice for its long range despite the thread and low damage at that circle as well.

I switched to free Karma Points too, it eliminates unnecessary bookkeeping. Still under the old rules with the high karma maxes, people would still be paying LP for Karma in my games. so despite not getting it as a full talent, Thieves can use half-magic for using it until Second Circle, and it helps out Scouts who may not wish to take Detect Trap as a talent option.

actually, Thieves and Scouts can make Half-Magic Perception Tests to detect traps and secret doors.
