Re: Weaving Threads to Pattern Items
Item History is used to discover the Test Knowledge for both Pattern Items and Thread Items. If your character already KNOWS (no guessing allowed), then they already have the "Research" Knowledge. That is the case in my example where the Test Knowlege is "Who was the last wielder"...

Re: Weaving Threads to Pattern Items
Order doesn't matter for either. For example let's say you were sent to investigate the disappearance of the Elf named DerpAfterDark. You find the corpse, and there's a thread item sword on it. The Rank 3 knowledge on it happens to be "Who last wielded the blade?" You don't need to researc...

Re: Grimoires, Other People's Grimoires, & You
Definitely agree, TR (Mr Rags?). I just tend to like clear, repeatable rules versus off-the-cuff solutions. I guess it's definitely arguable if the time spent engineering a robust solution once outweighs the shorter as needed ad-hoc request/reply - as long as the ad-hoc doesn't quickly turn into mor...

Re: Grimoires, Other People's Grimoires, & You
The cost is pretty prohibitive if the written spell takes the Raw Magic damage. 100 silver x Circle is sufficiently costed for a persistent benefit, I think, maybe a bit cheap. 100 silver x Circle that has a decent probably of blowing up every time you use it? Too expensive, IMHO. Maybe I'm just not...

Re: Grimoires, Other People's Grimoires, & You
For those mulling this over, here's how I think it could affect the game: - Assuming infinite money, it's possible for an Adept to have every spell for his Discipline in his spell book. This is definitely a problem since it could give easy access to much higher Circle spells than appropriate. FIX: S...

Re: Healing Blood Wounds
- For Blood Wounds that can be healed, you have two options: (1) wait for them to heal naturally, which [usually] takes a year and a day before you can recover them like a normal wound, or (2) try to beat the Blood Wound's mystic defense with a healing potion. So, the two items you cite from page 24...

Re: Weaving Threads to Pattern Items
I think the book is trying to help describe the distinction between a Thread Item and a Pattern Item. Thread Items are pretty much "fill in the blank" style Test Knowledges. - What is the name of the item? - What was the name of the Namegiver who last wielder the item? - What was the name ...

Grimoires, Other People's Grimoires, & You
You down with OPG? (yeah, you know me) Facts about grimoires in ED4: - Copying a spell into one's grimoire is the final stage in learning a spell. As such, I think it's safe to say, if it's in your grimoire, then you paid the LP and have learned it. - You can cast from other's grimoire. There's a pe...

Re: Magicians Casting Buffs On Teammates `From Behind'
Sounds very crunchy, but again, different strokes for different folks. As for Sustained Actions, my opinion would be sustained actions don't allow for chain casting. Sustained Actions are a series of Standard Actions, and since Spellcasting is a Standard Action, the magician can't do those, they've ...

Re: Magicians Casting Buffs On Teammates `From Behind'
I agree, CZ. While it overmechanizes things, I think there's a need to limit chain casting to reasonable amount. I think the Resist Element is a severe edge case (how often can you fit 5 low level buffs in a single matrix), characters will eventually get access to Shared Matrix. Spellcasting Step / ...
