Re: The Step System probability charts

For those who were interested in the articles that were up on the old RedBrick site, I've done a quick editing pass and have posted the first two up at http://www.loremerchant.com -- the new home of the Lore Merchant. As of this posting, only the first two are up, but the others should be following ...

Re: Co-Operative Actions Mark 2

Okay... but I didn't see where the PCs fit into the given example -- was the PC supposed to be the Captain? One of the crew?

Re: Co-Operative Actions Mark 2

I just think my alternative is much simpler, especially when things get difficult as in my example of airship combat, with only one calculation needed. So... in your example the Captain rolls his Air Sailing and adds 29? Or is he adding 29 to his Step before the roll? In either case, that makes the...

Re: Co-Operative Actions Mark 2

Hrm. Looking at your example, going with a flat +1 per hepler/crew is a simple enough way to do it, but it can get kind of ridiculous (e.g. is there a limit to how much "help" you can get), and doesn't address how "skilled" the helpers are. It also doesn't really mesh with the ex...

Re: Momentum attack

That's my read of it as well. The defensive talent (Avoid Blow/Parry) doesn't change the result of the original attack test, so I would allow Momentum Attack to be used.

Re: Magic Item Questions

Yes, using Item History (or a similar talent/ability) would let a character know that an item is a pattern item. The target number for the test would be the Spell Defense of the associated True pattern. A pattern item has one key knowledge, and I would be inclined to let the character know whether i...

Re: pattern item(s) bonuses

Then that works just fine (and I think it's kind of cool). A pattern item is generally best used as a plot/story maguffin, providing a situational bonus he GM doesn't want to make a permanent feature of his game. Anybody who has been playing fantasy RPGs for a while has probably seen a situation whe...

Re: pattern item(s) bonuses

IIRC, pattern items can only have one thread woven to them, and the character that benefits from the thread needs to have the pattern item on him to benefit. The more important thing is the bonuses only apply when interacting with the "parent" pattern. So the question is, what is the skull...

Re: Spell Balance

Elementalists also get Ice Mace and Chain (C3) and Blizzard Sphere (C4). Both can be nasty combat spells. One is single target, the other a multi-round AoE. They are modified by physical armor, but I don't see much equivalent direct-damage spells in the other Disciplines from C1-4. The two threads f...
