There are a couple rules tweaks you could use to limit this talent. First, have it restricted to the same 'encounter' range as Avoid Blow or similar talents. For area effect or group targets, there are a couple of ways you could tweak it... option one, allow one of the targets to use Steel Thought ...

Not in my game. Although there is a knack that in effect enhanced steel thought so that it functions like spirit dodge does against physical attacks and allows a steel thought roll even when surprised. Do spells effect ships other than the ones specifically designed to do do so. Eg Water Spout. As ships have no spell defence or mystic Armor I can't quite fathom an answer.
