A small windling Village was beset by animals attacking without reason. The village was named Bortruk's Passing, Named when an adventurer died nearby. It lies somewhat to the southwest of Borgan's rest. To escape the attacks the village had evacuated to Throal. The village Headman - one Plume - sent out fliers looking for adventurers to help. Given the unuusal nature of the attacks I joined the others with an eye to finding the root cause of the problem. Particularly if the taint which remains had found a place to grow.

Travel to the jungle was relatively easy, the track to Borgan's Rest being now well-travelled. The hills beyond were navigated acceptably. Upon reaching the jungle proper we began making our way to the village. During that travel we were set upon by some Blood Ravens and Monkeys. This fight proved fairly easy as Jik'Escala and I were capable of capturing the enemies attentions and the group as a whole found teamwork easy and effective. After the fight we continued to Bortruk's Passing. The village was obviously abandoned, as expected.

Further investigation of the village showed it to be well-placed to avoid animal attacks such as it had clearly suffered. No game trails were nearby, nor any predator's territorial markings. No other sign of why Namegivers, even such bite-sized ones as Windlings, would be attacked. After riding a short patrol I found that the others had located a desiccated corpse of a Monkey which had disintegrated on handling. This made it clear that whatever the problem was, it needed to be handled soon.

Upon my advice we proceeded to the Windling-inscribed circle which has been mentioned in other journals such as these. The circle was clearly defaced and as we arrived several gorillas and a couple of Monkeys (as well as our own snake and goat) were attracted to the circle. As haste is wasteful sometimes so is inaction. Ours lead to a pair of the gorillas touching the defaced, cursed, circle and being imbued with a lambent aura and aggressive demeanor.

Our first order of business was to prevent other animals from entering the circle, to accomplish which I used my speed to advantage. Once wounded or otherwise significantly restrained the animal attraction seemed to break. That task complete, those who had touched the circle already were put down. Further investigation showed that the animals were being driven into a rage due to being in great pain from the life force being drained from each animal. The destination of such cursed power is not yet known.

The circle was cleansed as best we could and the village restored with instructions to keep a close eye on the circle and request further assistance of Adepts should anything else untoward occur.

The Journal of Jik'escala, T'Skrang Swordswoman Extraordinaire

17 Riag, 1423 T.H.
A cloud of Windlings descended upon the Gates of Throal, and rumor spread like wildfire that their town had been overrun by strange animal attacks. Quis'Tan and I spoke with one of the village leaders and soon we were off with Fenrir, a Windling from another village, and Teddy, a charming Troll Air Sailor of all things.

23 Riag
The road to Bortruk's Passing was easy enough, but the village itself was well-secluded, even from the animals of the forest. No game trails, watering holes, nesting grounds, or other sites where animals congregated was nearby, so why the animal attacks? We spotted the dessicated corpse of a monkey that had died from some advanced wasting disease, and that confirmed our darkest fears: Horrors! We were not far from the Windling Runic Circle and proceeded to try and measure the extent of the taint and whether that particular sacred site had been affected.

23 Riag (continued)
Clearly defaced with runes written in blood, the runic circle had ceased to be a place of calm and healing and instead it drove all animals who came near it into mad creatures bent only on destruction. The animals, some gorillas and monkeys in number, as well as Fenrir's menagerie, approached the runic circle, and any who touched it were imbued with a consuming aura of aggression and hatred. We quickly went to work trying to prevent the few animals who had not touched the circle from getting tainted, and putting down those that had become tainted irrevocably. We scrubbed the runic circle clean, dispelling the effect, but its origin remains unknown.

Fenrir, male Windling Shaman
Jik'escala, female T'Skrang Swordmaster
Ludvikt Yun "Teddy" Ruddermun, male Troll Air Sailor
Quis'Tan, Obsidiman Spirit Rider
