From the collected letters of Ursula von Knuckebreaker

15 Strassa, 1422 T.H.

Dearest Mother and Father:

I hope this letter finds you well. This new year promises to bring many new opportunities for our people. The other Adepts have cleared out the Bandit's Lair and new trade routes are opening up. Hyelorn Skyspirit of the Cubrews Trade Alliance is seeking a new route through the mountains to the Serpent River, attempting to cut Sosonopa and the Iceclaws out of any potential trade with Syrtis.

On the third day, we passed near a Greater Termite Mound. At first, we tried to skirt around them, having no interest in picking a fight with a legion of insects, but Vlolkir attracted their attention and they spit their Formic Acid at us. A few of its fellows joined in battle against us, but we made short work of them.

On the fifth day, we arrived at the mighty Serpent River and set up camp. Hyelorn wanted to observe the river for several days to see if anyone (or anything) was making use of it.

During the night of the eighth day of our journey, being the third night we spent at camp, a small clutch of Sea Snakes mistook us for food and attacked. Damkina managed to kill and eat two while I drove a third away. The fourth was also killed thanks to Celemir, Fliver, and Vlolkir.

On the twelfth day, we broke camp and attempted to find our way back to Throal, desiring to see if an easy route back could be found, whether to be joined or matched with the route out.

At the foot of the mountains, we found a tower that had once stood 80 feet tall, with a blasted hole gaping near the base. As we investigated, we found numerous traps, including a bear trap, and we also found several cadaver men. By double-teaming them, we were able to take care of them quickly.

The tower is either a honeypot trap for Horrors or a false door for a Kaer. We were unable to determine which with sufficient certainty and more research will be required. We safely made it back to Throal having mapped both routes. Look Hopefully new opportunities to explore the Serpent River will abound soon.

Yours,

Ursula von Knuckebreaker, née Nusserman

From the Journal of Fliver - Windling Illusionist.

Greetings Journal!
With my recent Initiation, I have closed my previous volume of my journal and started this new one. I was born and raised in Throal, and thrilled to be free of it's underground halls and out in this newly opened surface world that I have previously only heard about in song and legend. There did not happen to be any illusionists in the community I was raised in, so when I proved to be an Aspirant, I was apprenticed to a well respected Elven Illusionist who works at the royal opera house creating special visual and audio effects. I have an appreciation for the arts and delight in plays and song. I am friends with several Questors of Astendar, and have contemplated joining their ranks.

I have just completed my first journey in the surface world! Previously paths have been explored through the Throalic Mountains heading North to Iceclaw moot, and around the western edge of the mountains. The Cubrew Trading Alliance has resolved to seek a mountain path through the Mountains going East. Some Novice adventurers such as myself were hired to accompany their pathfinder. In addition to myself there was a Sky Raider named Vlolkir, a Woodsman named Celimar, and a Beastmaster named Ursula (and a pet bear). Vlokir and myself were brand new, but the others had already risen to Circle 3.

It is of course the start of a new year and the middle of winter. The halls of Throal are of course fairly constant in temperature all year, and the temperature variations outside the gates felt severe to me, but from what I read were nothing compared to what it is like in the high mountain passes. I suggested that the trading company supply us with warm winter clothing, which they did.

The actual exploration was much easier than I expected. We attempted to retrace a pre-scourge route from ancient maps, and had absolutely no problems doing so. We marched right through the mountains, up passes and down. The route was quite suitable for persons on foot, or mules, but many trail improvements would have to be done to make the route suitable for wagons once again. At one time we came upon a colony of Greater Termites. We resolved to go around it, but somebody must have cut a corner, because we found ourselves in combat. After 6 were slain, the 2 survivors (that we saw - we have no idea how many more there might have been) fled into their mound and hid.

Like I said, we exited the mountains and found the Serpent river with little problem. Our sponsor (Hyelorn Skyspirit) wished to observe the river for a few days, to see if there was much traffic upon it. The first night we were camped we were attacked by 4 sea snakes, which again were dealt with, with little difficulty.

After observing the river for a few days and seeing no traffic upon it whatsoever, Hyelorn announced that we would be attempting the return trip to Throal via a different sequence of passes, so that we could judge which route was best. Again we had absolutely no problem following our copies of the pre-scourge maps or finding our way.

Upon the new route we came upon a curious tower. It looked broken and ruined, but upon closer inspection seems to have been constructed to look that way. I speculate that it was built to cover up a kaer underneath it. Who would think to look for a kaer hidden under a broken kear? We ought to research this tower to find out more. We slew 3 Cadaver Men whom were using the broken kear as a lair.

The trading company let us buy our slightly used fine winter gear from them for half price. Unfortunately in my rush to take a good bargain I forgot about my continuing studies with my master. I had to pawn the fine winternight cloak I had just purchased, but I was able to return to my master and learn the mysteries of the 2nd circle of Illusion.

Celemir's Chronicles

Hyelorn Skyspirit (elf) of the Cubew Trading Alliance asks you to escort him while scouting for better access to the Serpent River from Throal. Fliver, Vlolkir, and Ursula join me in this exploration.

The group relies on my Navigation to get us to the river, and I'm able to make a very good map along the way. This makes Hyelorn happy, anything to make his merchanting life easier. Considering the distance of several days travel, I'm pleased to know we can return quickly when we're ready.

We exit the mountains and enter a wooded area. Vlolkir spots some Greater Termites ahead. We try to work around their nest, but they catch wind of us. Eventually we defeat 8 of them.

Later that day, we come to the River. Hyelorn wants to camp out for a week to watch the river, make sure it’s safe.

After a very dull day of watching the river, night falls. Vlolkir is on the first night watch. He hears something coming up towards us, and wakes us up. Soon, 3 Sea Snakes emerge from the brush. Ursula Dominates one, a fourth arrives later trying to attack me from behind, but it's not easy to ambush me.

By the Exploration Corps reconing, we are somewhere in the 47:07 or 48:08 area

Days later Hyelorn tells us to move up the river a bit to scout for any other settlements. After a few days of scouting, he has us turn back around and scout a different path. Fortunately we don't have to worry about fresh water or food, I'm able to hunt enough game that our rations are seldom used unless we want to save time.

We come across a ruined tower, there is a huge section of the Northern wall has fallen from the ground level. Hyelorn seems to recognize it, there used to a citadel (above ground kaer). I heads inside and spot a bear trap just inside the opening. I use some chalk to mark it for the others. Moving further in, I find 2 undead, Cadavermen. A third comes around the center pillar to attack me, but they're not the most stealthy of opponents. We make quick work of them.

There are markings on the floor like something has been moved. The hole in the wall looks to be constructed as if it had been collapsed. Fiver realizes that the collapsed entrance looks like it was by design. The trap looks very old. I go back outside to inspect the pile of rocks next to the entrance. Fiver spots some language on the center column, he can’t crack it, but copies some of it down for the library.

We're not sure if this is a kaer, or a horror trap, but we found what Hyelorn was looking for, and that's enough for one job.
