Icarus, a regular companion of mine, had an idea. He is an air sailor with no ship. He has a cart now, and continues to dream of more. Unfortunately many of those dreams are fueled by ale and stronger spirits. While pursuing either the spirits or the dream he heard about herds of Stajain out past Sosanopa and decided that what he needed to grow his empire is Stajain. I am still unsure if he was planning on growing the cart, or growing his fortune.

We traveled to Sosanopa. That journey is fairly easy as the trail is now well enough used to follow without difficulty, but not so well used that one cannot forage along the way. We stopped outside Sosanopa long enough to reprovision a bit and continued on. While Icarus seemed pretty confident in his direction, I am uncertain as to whether he was headed towards the herds.
Fortune did smile upon us though. Icarus’ path led us directly to a broken wagon, and the screams of a woman in pain. I have said that we Adepts are a paranoid lot, in this case the paranoia was all mine. If you have read my previous submissions to the Library, you will know that I have been in this ambush (from both sides). Nez crept forward to investigate, and returned to inform us that it was a woman in labor. We hailed the cart and offered our aid. The cart’s axel was broken and the woman had been in labor more than a day. Icarus took the lead in helping the woman while Torgan started on the cart.
The rest of us helped Icarus as best we could, and he was able to deliver a baby boy. The parents even named the baby Icarus. As soon as the child was born, the rest of us left Icarus to deal with family matters and glady went on to the mending of an axle. There is much less life and death urgency in axle fixing.
With the wagon fixed we escorted the couple and child to their relative’s farmstead where they planned to join and expand the business. The farmers were able to give us more recent news on the Stajain herd’s location.
Upon finding the herd we all learned a lot that we did not know about animals. Both Nez and I have some skill in handling animals as individuals but no real skill in moving them in groups. Over the course of a day we managed to get some of the males ‘friendly’ to us. Enough so that we hoped that we could convince them to follow us back to Thoral. (We will never know how that would have worked out).
This herd had some original claimants, and they found us. They tried to take the Stajain from us with threats, and then by force.
They outnumbered us, but more importantly they were mounted. Some of them were able to get the herd moving at a speed we could not match. The rest engaged us in combat. Being unable to catch the herd immediately, I focused on capturing their leader (probably to focused on that). With their leader unconscious, the others just kept picking him up and trying to get him to safety. It was not pretty. We lost the herd, they lost a leader.
We managed to return to Thoral, with a few horses and gear from the raiders, including a warhorse, to the trip was not completely in vain.
