Man, that sounds fun. =) Sounds like you're describing something closer to Knights of Badassdom (fun movie), whereas most of my LARP experience has been World of Darkness.

Yeah KoB and Role Models are movies that give a pretty good (if somewhat Hollywood) view of boffer LARPing (called such because of the padded weapons).
There are also documentaries Monster Camp and Durkon that give you some inside views.

Minds Eye Theater? That would explain the visual acuity you were talking about with all the hand signals. Good concept for mechanics, especially since one feature was to be able to play the game in public. I read the book, but never played it.
