multiple questions

Post by earcaraxe » Sun Jan 27, 2019 4:49 pm

hi!

1) at character creation can the 8 free skill points be spent on journeyman-level skills?

2) can a circle 2 character learn a journeyman-level skill, for instance resist taunt?

3) do extra successes from spellcasting a damaging spell lower armor (penetrate like physical attacks)? if yes then the "extra success" effects of spells r in addition? (my guess here is that spells doesnt penetrate, at least, not by deafault, right?)

Yes and each point for a journeyman-level skill counts the same amount as for novice-level skills.

No problem here as well, you just need to consider, that learning journey-level skills is more expensive than novice-level skills.

I don't really understand this question. In fourth edition you can't ignore / penetrate the armor with a high enough attack like you could in older editions. Neither with physical nor with magical attacks.

thanks!

1) So it is worth buying the stronger ones at creation. (Even warden level skills perhaps...)

3) i meant u get +2 damage per extra success with physical attacks. I guess its not true for magical ones, although it says on page 378 "Exceptionally well-placed attacks, lucky shots, or attacks that sufficiently focus a character’s magic—these can all result in more effective
attacks." But "more effective" in the case of spells only means the things in the used spells description.

Before answering always first read errata.

1. No.
General Skills, Page 71
Errata: Only Novice-tier skills can be purchased at character creation with starting skill points. The line stating this was omitted in layout.

2. Yes.

3. All spells have in description what extra successes do, like - Success Levels: Increase Effect (+2 Effect Step)
Not all damaging spells gain +2 to damage / success.

Woops, good to know, guess I have to edit my last character a bit :(

We solved it by making those cost 2 points per rank at creation and the max rank you could have journeyman skills at creation being 1.

That was before the errata though, where our GM interjected that it seemed like an oversight and came up with the above rule.

Although this 'special' rule might make sense in the context of being unaware of the errata; having a brand new character with Rank 3 Second Attack + Rank 3 Riposte + Rank 2 Second Weapon would be quite OP in my opinion.

That's why this was included. You can learn something advanced, but you can't have much practice in it.
Also, the LP cost and training times/costs for these talents far outweigh the usefulness of raising them compared to their core talents most of the time.

Since the errata we handle it according to the official rules, of course.
