On the Topic of Bees
Also, Why Nature Must be Subjugated

For the impatient reader, allow me to summarize: Bees are terrible.

I always thought that bees were lovely little creatures that provided delicious honey that could then be turned into even more delicious mead. I was terribly, horribly, awfully wrong.

Bees are giant almost-windling sized monstrosities that fly butt-first at you with the intent of simultaneously poisoning you and draining your blood. This is not acceptable. I am not some kind of self-harming briar patch of an elf. Also, nature and I are going to have some words.

To provide context, it turns out that these Blood Bees have been terrorizing the areas northwest of Throal. I joined my good companion William Carver, my only slightly less good companion Norg (on account of we have spent less time together), and new faces (to me): Zil the Windling elementalist and U'k'talla the T'skrang swordmaster. Whipmaster? He used a whip.

Our mission, and its execution, were relatively straightforward. We went into the hills, whereupon we found said monstrous insects and proceeded to clear out the first stage of the infestation. It was a painful process, and U'k'talla took the worst of it but we did well and ventured on.

We came upon our common nemesis - the river. This time, however, there was a bridge. No engineering required! That was the good news. The bad news: The bees had learned tactics. Yes, I understand exactly how ridiculous that sounds, but they were organized. They had laid an ambush which, fortunately, we anticipated.

We fought them. They came in waves. They bit and stung and buzzed and harried us. Multiple times, they pierced their butt-spikes (stingers, I am told they are called) into my leg and proceeded to try to exsanguinate me. As the community-minded dwarf that I am, I immediately signaled to my colleagues that I was in need of aid. This is a technique they call 'screaming in pain and fear'. It is highly effective. Equally effective was carrying these little buzzing vampires over to Norg, who was able to pulverize them with his bizarrely massive fists.

Wounded and exhausted, we moved forward and made camp. Only to be ambushed by wolves. And also trolls. I was a bit groggy during all of this but it turns out the trolls were not, in fact, ambushing us but were assaulting the wolves in an effort to keep us safe. Community! Kebb and, ah, ahem. His friend. Kebb and his friend helped us drive the wolves off and invited us to their frosty trollmoot.

I must say, what lovely company these trolls were. There were feats of strength and courage, good drink, simple and hearty food and great camaraderie. I spent nearly a full week there and, having returned, have found that the mountain air and narrow paths have left me rather more agile.

Trolls are great. Bees are the worst.

From the journal of Zil, Elementalist.
Some concerned citizens have been complaining about the blood bees that have been attacking travelers skirting the mountains to the west (41,07). They also report that the bees seem to be demonstrating unusually intelligent tactics. They hired us to find the hive and clear them out. Dvarim Bolg, William Carver, Norg, U'k'talla, and myself agreed to accept the mission.

We went to the area where blood bees had been encountered before and started searching. We spotted 3 blood bees and two drones in the distance. We took thorough preparations (wood skins, and buff spells for everybody, and I tied an extra thread for an extra target on my Earth Darts, then I moved forward and blasted two of them. The bees advanced in a pincer movement, and at one time U'k'talia was in a bit of a sticky situation when blood bee reinforcements showed up at a particularly tricky time, but we prevailed. I got to use my very, very brand new Sooth Venom knack I just learned.

William used Mystic Pursuit upon an injered drone to try to find its hive or queen. He got a bearing and we advanced and found a rickety bridge. William spotted some blood bees hiding under it. Again we had a chance to prepare and buff spells for everybody. Just as we were finishing our preparations, the bees appeared to realize we were not going to be ambushed, and attacked us. This was another tough fight, and again the blood bees received reinforcements. Several of us were poisoned by the drones, and again I used my new Sooth Venom knack. Dvarim got poisoned, but, being a stoic, did not like to complain, so I did not know he was poisoned until the paralytic poison overcame him. fortunately that did not happen until after the fight had been won.

We advanced over the bridge, and found a place to camp. During the 2nd watch, Nord was surprised by two trolls who attacked the 4 wolves that had been sneaking up upon him. The trolls and us made quick work of the wolves, only one of which lived to run away.

The two trolls introduced each other as Kreb and Fugheush, sky raider and warrior. The told us we were not far from Iceclaw moot, and invited us to accompany them there for the rest of the night. We did and stayed with them for a few days. We agreed that we would come back very shortly to destroy the blood bee hive.

My name is William Carver and I am a third circle Scout.

Zil, Dvarim, U'k'Talla, Norg and I all headed out into the hills to track down and destroy the bees nest. We headed towards 41.07 and encountered our first blood bee group. It was not an easy fight, U'k'Talla showed his skilled very well though. He made great use of a whip to entangle the bees and then followed up with his tail to sting the bees with his own dagger sized stinger. He was the lowest of us in terms of circle but I know he had a higher kill count than I myself was able of getting. With as large as the bees were, I could have used them a touch large, say the size of a barn to hit them.

After we finished the bees off I decided to try using Mystic Pursuit to track down the way to the hive. I honed in on the very essence of the bee tasting its blood, smelling it sent.. I used all my senses and was able to sense where the bee was coming from. This isn't all that much different in how I track something down, but I feel more of a connection with my target when I'm pursuing it. We made our way in that direction after a short rest and came upon a bridge that was partial destroyed. I approached it so I could look under it as I thought perhaps the hive was going to be under the bridge, that was when I saw the bees there. I backed up and we made out plans to engage them, when help arrived in the form of more bees. Seems the bees are smarter than we gave them credit for. The battle here was rough, I eventually even had to use my sword to help out U'k'Talla and Dvarim as I was not as focused as I should have been with the troll sling, I even once bounced a rock off of Norg but lucky for me I do not thing the troll noticed the mishap.

Eventually we defeated them and were resting for the night. Norg was on watch and suddenly a cry came out in the night yelling at us to wake up. One of the wolves just jumped at me but missed, how it missed a sleeping target I don't know. I am thankful that it did though. With the cry I sprang to my feet and grabbed the first thing I could put my hands on, which was my mace. It was a short but brutal fight with the help of the two trolls that woke us up and altered us to the danger.

We found out that there was a moot nearby, and we also located the actual location of the hive. They also told us about the tactics that the bees also seemed to use and that they were having a hard time getting supplies. I think once we get rid of that nest things for the trolls will greatly improve.
