New Magic Book

Is the newly released magic book the one that enables spellcasters to use spells beyond 8th circle?

Hiya,

There is no "newly released magic book" but If you mean the ED4 Companion, then no. If you are referring to the currently-being-kickstarted ED4 Mystic Paths book, probably not -- that's focused on Disciplines.

Josh commented a while back on a planned book dealing with magic at some future date, but nothing confirmed at time of writing.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'newly released magic book'.

The latest book released so far was Eleven Nations somewhere in March.

The next book that will be released (the one with the current Kickstarter) is more of an 'Adpet's Way'.

The 'magical book' will be the one including the Warden+ spells.

We have no clear release date for it. In fact, last time I've checked the Iopos book was scheduled to be released before that one.

Although it has been discussed at length in the past with a ton of drama (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=712&p=6535#p6535), I personally still have a lot of issues with those being missing from the Companion.

Ok thanks

So what does a spell caster do for spells beyond 8th?

For ED4? Hold off on using Circle 9+ spells until there is a formal announcement and release of the Magic book. Or if you have access to earlier editions of Earthdawn, you could use those spells in the interim -- though you will likely need to modify to accommodate the ED4 additional threads mechanics (or you can just ignore it until the new book is released).

Most of my players go for a second disciplin to spend their legend points on those ^^
I'm currently playing an Illusionist and not interested in a second disciplin because it doesn't fit to the way I play this character.
I will just go with the talents and see how it goes.

I have heard it said that the designers feel that with the Extra Threads system introduced in 4th edition, there is lessor need for everyday adventuring spells past 8th circle. A Master pulling a Novice spell with 4 extra threads instead of just the one that a Novice can pull is what makes the Master version so much more scary. And it is not a separate spell, it is just the basic spell, with 3 extra threads pulled.

Most any simple spell effect that you would want you players to have unlimited access to can probably best be described as a spell under 8th circle that just has 3 or 4 extra threads pulled to it, like a Warden or Master can do. Actual Warden and Master level spells are usually considered major rituals such as (this spell turns a forest kingdom into the blood wood), not for single casters.
