Re: Actual use for Hold Thread?
In standard combat, not necessarily all that useful. All I could think of that wouldn't be equivalent to the other uses you mentioned is a niche situation where someone's pulling a move-attack-move style action such as a swoop attack. If you need to hit them with a short range or touch spell Hold Th...

Re: Space and Time (Mostly Space)
I think you might get more mileage out of making static range categories rather than doing math at your table every time someone casts a spell or uses thrown weapons or missile weapons. Then just tell people their weapons or spells let them target at short range up to whatever range they can reach w...

Re: combat tactics
I'm not sure which aspect of this is causing you problems but I think you can just let the bodyguard setup work unless you see the less tough characters starting to outperform their companions. If that's not a problem you don't need to threaten them much as a GM. Generally you want the players to al...

Re: Bone Circle / Bone Spirit - Aid Summoner
Doh! I came here hoping for some sort of official ruling, but alas there doesn't seem to be one. The reply by Mataxes on the first page of this thread is probably what you're looking for. I see that now! 1 power per 2 levels. I remember reading it when I first got the book and haven't been able to ...

Re: dog
I think you're referring to the guard dog entry. It makes sense as the average domestic canine isn't necessarily any good at tracking. Step 6 sounded low for realism; they may not be great at it but they're clearly better than an untrained human. But it's actually step 8 with the bonus from their en...

GM Trick: Running Pack Tactics
Hi! This is something I did a long time ago while running 1st edition Earthdawn. I had two players and an encounter with a pack of wolves but you could probably use the idea for any large organized group. Below is a technique to manage and describe an encounter of this type with a larger number of f...

Re: Suggestions for caster
I don't have a copy of the 1st edition rulebook anymore. My group that played the game in the 90's included me as an illusionist and a friend playing an elementalist. We also found there were issues with scaling the spells. Our GM's solution was to knock one thread off of the spells that had them. I...

Re: aspect of the cruel physician
I'm still reading over everything and the bulk areas of the player's guide such as spells, equipment, etc. were areas I mostly skipped. But I think I understand the actual use for this spell. It may be a bit niche but it's still potentially quite useful even though it has a trade-off. The spell allo...

Re: Bone Circle / Bone Spirit - Aid Summoner
The spell doesn't particularly say how or whether you can specify the spirit's powers. You should probably ask your GM how they awnt to run that. These spell-summoned spirits are all described as tasked spirits if you're reading the summoning chapter. They really only do exactly what the spell says ...
