Zvilyn reached out for assistance on another venture, this time he has a lead on Shireker Bats. He's been talking about taming one of the horrible things for months, I have no idea why. I decided to join for the usual reasons: it got me something to do far away from Throal and mother's incessant enquiries about when am I going to get a real job and settle down with a nice girl.

Reys, Nez, and Vralino joined us making for a group that sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. We made our way to the Sevros with little trouble, it is hard to miss the jungle walking south east from Throal after all, and, after a couple of days there, we found some less ruined ruins. As we started exploring the step pyramid we were ambushed by a bunch of Shadownmants. The first real warning we got was Reys being gobbled up by one and then they were everywhere. Zivilyn ended up in a bad shape too while Nez and his little furball of death tore apart the one eating Reys.

All the Shadowmants seemed to be infused with some kind of strange elemental powers, but after we recovered from the surprise we dispatched them with ease. The top of the pyramid made for a nice spot to camp and we spent several hours tending to wounds and feasting to recover.

In the morning some more examination of the structure revealed a door, or at least a stone slab blocking an access corridor. A swift application of trollish lockpicking later, we were confronted by an ancient looking elf complaining about us not knocking. That was of course completely untrue as I had knocked one on the door, it is not my fault the door fell apart when I did so. The strange old elf seemed to forget his anger at the door rather quickly and invited us in for tea.

We spent some time talking with him, and learned that his name is Larduinio Dwomp and he is a Nethermancer of some renown, or at least was before the scourge. He had spent the last four centuries experimenting with the creation of exotic varieties of night fliers. It stands to reason that the Shadowmants we fought the day before were some of his specimens. When asked if he would be willing to sell Zivilyn a Shrieker Bat to the windling's specification Larduino quoted a quite reasonable sum in my opinion, but Zivilyn refused.

I have no idea why we had to lower ourselves in a guano filled cave to capture a bat when we could have just bought one, but Zivilyn mumbled something about it not being sporting or something. So into the cave we went, where we accidentally startled some bats, got scratched up a bit and once things calmed down again, Zivilyn managed to find the right puke machine for his lifestyle and we all got out.

On the way back, I stopped at Ironbark grove to thoroughly cleanse myself at Azurea's spa where I noticed that a fancy looking amulet had been buried in the much that stuck to Rune-Carve Citadel

There are (at least) two possibilities both of which the PCs touched lightly upon, but did not investigate enough to definitely settle the matter.
(a) You know that the OUTSIDE of his lair is "Open". You did not successfully sight either him or the inside of his lair. You have no idea if he or his lair is corrupted or not.
(b) Some have stated that they think he seems mad. It is known that the more powerful and subtle horrors, while loving to drive people mad, don't really like feeding upon people that are already mad when they find him. Thus it is not inconceivable that his madness is his protection. It is not impossible that powerful and subtle horrors show up, look around, and say "crazy old hermit who likes adding 'air imbued' masks to shadowmants so that they can turn invisible at will. I have no way to improve on this situation", and then the horror leaves hungry. Meanwhile less powerful and less subtle horrors who might eat the hermit can't eat the old man until after they fight their way through all the invisible shadowmants. In this case the lair might be uncorrupted since nobody is doing any corrupting.
What the true situation is, is still unknown to the PCs.

This seems to be an auspicious season for finishing tasks left alone for too long. First, the trade route between Skyreader Island and Irondelve, and now I've finally been able to track down a companion I've been seeing visions of for some time. The Spirits have led me to explore deep into the Servos in search of my new friend.

After extensive research, studying the journals of explorers and adepts who ventured out into the wild, I finally found something that matched the description of what I have been seeing for so long; a large bat, capable of emitting a piercing shriek that can shatter glass and render a target almost insensate, that can almost vanish on a whim. I do not know yet what I am to do with the knowledge of the place we found, but I will certainly need to spend some time in thought and communion with the Spirit World to gain greater understanding in the matter.

Joining myself and Howler were Nez and Sagarmatha, Norg, Reyis (who seems to have left Fluffy behind on this journey), and a young Ork I don't believe I have previously met by the name of Vralino, a Swordmaster of sorts (she seems to prefer a spear though. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I've met a Swordmaster that actually uses swords yet. Maybe they should have spent more time thinking about the name of their discipline. Should be a Weapon Master or something). The others are well known to me, and readily agreed to explore the Servos with me (Norg may have gotten a look that said he'd rather drink a barrel full of wyvern venom than hang around shrieker bats on his face, but he still said yes). Vralino insisted that I should agree to help her out with her own project. Fair's fair, so I readily agreed. I understand she is interested in learning the ways of the Elementalist, perhaps I can give her some guidance.

The journals and reports I had spent the last months sorting through indicated a location in the Servos which had all manner of unusual creatures, especially nocturnal flying varieties around it. Their maps were not perfect, but it seems fortune was in our favour; the directions we got were sufficient to lead us to what would turn out to be exactly the right place, and perhaps this was truly the right time to make this journey because I think it might have taxed our ability to survive in the wilderness were it not for my abilities as an Elementalist to keep us fed and drinking clean water, which I have only just recently learned how to do. The area we found had a step pyramid that was quite thoroughly overgrown - so overgrown that later on when we settled down for the night there were sufficient trees at the top for me to create Shelters for all.

That, however, would not come until later. I had worried that we were liable to be ambushed if there were powerful stealthy creatures in the region, and with just cause as it turns out. Reyis had been keeping us as well-prepared as we could be by granting us Prey Senses, but just as we both spotted a few shadowmants moments before they could jump on us, we discovered that we had definitely failed to notice yet another as it struck Reyis down with a single devastating blow, and then nearly brought myself down as well, all before we could even begin to shout any warning. The remainder of them struck at is, inflicting grievous wounds on our unprepared selves. Fortunately, with the aid of our Polecat Resilience, we were able to fend off the venom from their stingers, but I was so dazed that I barely know what happened next; I am told that Nez and Sagarmartha finished one off, and Norg tore another in half, and Vralino accounted well for herself also. In the end, one of them, which seemed quite unusually fast, escaped, while the rest were dealt with so that we at least would not need to worry about them in the night.

We had quite the Hero's Feast that night, twice, and our spirits were much revived. Feeling much better, we got a better look around the pyramid. It had been late when we arrived, so apart from a brief astral examination to ensure it was not horribly corrupted we had not done much searching. In the morning we found what appeared to be a thick stone door, of sorts, which had not been opened in a very long time. Norg loudly announced that he would open it, and to my surprise rather than lifting or shoving or moving it sideways, he simply slammed right through it with his entire body. He looked so happy to have done that, I think he might have even joined this expedition if he had known for certain there would be thundra beetles as well as shrieker bats. Or maybe not. That sounds like a truly miserable experience, actually.

Well, shortly afterwards an elderly Elf came along shouting about how we had broken his door. Personally, I think it had been there so long that if Norg hadn't smashed it open, it might have taken an entire time of dyres to budge it open, and we may have done him a favour in making it possible for him to actually use his front entrance at all. He seemed quite senile, although not terribly dangerous. Rambled on quite a bit. Mentioned a number of details that seem to imply he hasn't noticed that the scourge was going on for 400 years. Complained about people interrupting his work to ask for a cup of sugar (at which point someone promptly asked for a cup of sugar... I was too busy trying not to laugh so hard I cried at that point to recall who). Then observed that he wasn't even sure what to do with guests. By this point, I had gotten a decent look at his workspace and was pretty sure he was a Nethermancer, so I suggested some tea, thinking it might calm him down as that is normally part of their Karma Ritual.

So he went off to get some tea, and I quickly grabbed some plants to make a plant feast of biscuits for our contribution. Turns out the fellow has been working (probably for over 400 years) on modifying various nightflyers. He was almost certainly responsible for the shadowmants which attacked us the previous evening (we didn't accuse him, and he didn't say he was, but when 5 shadowmants, each strange in a different way, ambush you, and it's right next to the home of a person who modifies shadowmants, it's not hard to put two and two together and come up with four). His home was also connected to a cave system leading below-ground which he said was full of all manner of bats and shadowmants, and possibly owls too (he mentioned having done some work on those). He seemed willing to sell them, but his asking price for an untamed bat was... well, it was not far off from buying an untamed griffin. Also, I was looking for a specific bat, and he was being pretty vague about it. I figured we could do some exploring, and find what we wanted, without giving a mad Nethermancer who apparently never considered the possibility of a back entrance for the Horrors into his home through the cave system that was definitely connected to the outside. Also, quite honestly, if Norg could get in the front door, a horror probably could get in as well... Nez in particular didn't like the idea of trusting the fellow, and I can hardly blame him.

Eventually we took our leave, and he seemed to have forgotten about the whole door thing. Probably for the best... the kind of magic it takes to modify living creatures is very powerful, and I'm certainly not confident we could have defeated him had he turned out to be immediately dangerous rather than just senile. Fortunately, we had a pair of Shamans on this expedition and we invoked the senses of the jungle hunters to lead us to where we might find nearby bat colonies. It was almost overwhelming when we found the place; a great wide opening into the earth, deep and dark. So naturally, Norg just jumped off the edge (as a reminder, he is an Air Sailor as well as a Gauntlet, so this was not suicide... as long as the cave wasn't hundreds of yards deep). Vralino was rather more cautious, and climbed down. Nez guided Sagarmatha down, while I set up a Shelter for Howler to pass the time in and then flew down myself. I figured we wanted to disturb the inhabitants as little as possible, so I loaded my spell matrices with Moonglow and Sooth the Savage Beast rather than my more combative spells I normally prepare. Between myself and Reyis, we hoped that we would be able to soothe any colonies that got too upset.

It took a little while, looping around in the large caverns, but we eventually found a cavern with a number of Shrieker bats in it. Unfortunately, at just that moment Norg slipped in the layer of guano coating the floor, and the flailing and hammering of his fists into the wall to steady himself woke them up. Now, it can be reasonably expected that in any fight with shrieker bats, people are going to be knocked over. It seems that Larduinio Dwomp (the mad Nethermancer from earlier) had neglected to mention some of his creations, because these seemed more prone to knocking people about than usual, and by rather different means... a buffet from their wings sweeping air at you and knocking you down, rather than the usual shrieking (although there were also plenty that used the more conventional shrieking method). It was a terrible mess. I am only glad that I at least had the presence of mind to keep my mouth closed when I was knocked flat on that floor. Sagarmatha caught a particularly unpleasant shriek that had her reeling for nearly half a minute. Fortunately Nez realized that we had simply startled them, and once we stopped fighting they stopped as well after a little bit, which was much faster than soothing them one by one or even in groups could have ever been, which Reyis and I had been attempting to do.

In any event, Reyis and myself made the attempt to bond with the bats, but it was difficult to reach them as they were quite willful. I spotted one that I knew from my visions, and was able to coax it into a freshly-woven basket to bring it back home with me, and Reyis gathered one as well, thanks to our soothing spells.

We got back out of the cave system (which was a little bit more difficult for some than others), made our way to a stream of fresh water, and proceeded to render it thoroughly unfresh by washing ourselves clean in it. I do not care to think about how thoroughly covered in filth we got after being knocked about in a cave liberally coated in guano, and it certainly would have made it hard to explain to Larduino, who had asked that we bring a letter with us on the way back to Throal to an exotic animal trader. I only recall the name of one such (Morchik, I believe), and since we had indicated our willingness we collected the letter on our way home. I should add that along the way home, I took the time to *very* thoroughly inspect our new bat friends closely in the astral for signs of taint to be certain they were free of it, but I might add that since Larduino does not seem terribly rational, and we couldn't get a clear astral reading on him while we were in his home, it would be quite wise to carefully examine any animals that anyone buys from him. I mean, *we* didn't trust him enough to let him choose a (possibly horror-tainted) companion for us, so I'm certainly not going to recommend that others trust him excessively.

Anyways, it's time to get back to working with Haze (my new bat). If I can find him, that is.

Zivilyn has heard of an area in the Servos Jungle that has some interesting beasts and we decided to go investigate. He was especially interested in some stealthy bats.

So we head into the jungle just south of the Jungle Mine and come upon a large stepped pyramid. As we approach and climb the pyramid we are ambushed by a group of Shadowmants who were extremely stealthy. At the start of the fight Reyis was knocked down and unconscious before anyone knew what was going on. I took a minor hit during the fight and Sagarmatha was clear. The rest of the party got badly beat up and we decided to hold up on top of the pyramid and heal for the night.

The next day Norg saw a door and got a strange excitement in his eyes. I quickly learned as he started to bash and destroy the door with his bare fists. After the stone slab was destroyed a elderly elf came out yelling. Apparently Norg just shattered his front door.

The senile elf invited us in after yelling for several minutes. Shortly after he was finished he invited us in and offered us some tea and forgot about the door. He forgot his name for a while but apparently it was Larduinio Dwomp. Sagarmatha was very wary of the individual especially after I mentioned that the caves that connect to his pyramid are open to the outside during the scourge.

It seems that the elf is having a hard time with the passage of time. He referred to the last people to have visited being pre-scourge but he mentions it only being a couple years ago. How old do Elves live?

After asking some questions though it appears his unease was unjust as the elderly man just offered to sell his animals. The prices seemed quite high and we saw several bats before we entered the pyramid. We searched for the bat caves and once we entered we found thousands of bats including dozens of extremely large bats. I believe we startled the bats for a bit and had some attack us but then I was able to tell if we backed away they would go back to resting.

The Shamans Reyis and Ziv have an amazing spell that allows you to soothe multiple wild beasts at a time. We used that and were able to grab the specimen that Ziv needed and headed out the door.

At this point, she has found value in a small circle of friends and has even begun networking socially for jobs. By now she has developed a dislike towards T'Skrang, although her friendships are not affected by this mentality. The text remains unaltered to maintain its authenticity (Certain terms and names written wrong to keep in character). It is written in Or'zet.

As I was running around posting information about going to the Floating City of House V'Strimon, when I saw a Windling looking for companions for a similar purpose. Apparently he was heading out to get a Shrieker Bat. We made a deal. I'd help him get his Shrieker Bat, and he'd help me with whatever Jeremiah Breyer needed. Heh heh, that's fun to say. Jeremiah Breyer. Wait, you can't hear me, you're just a book. Anyways, he got his team together and we went west to the Servos Jungle. I swear that place is starting to feel like my backyard.

So we arrived at some... thing. They kept saying it was a giant pyramid, but I swear it looked like a bench from the Bedrock Bar (rule of 1 on perception). As we approached, this Shadowmant came out of nowhere. Poor Reyis, went down immediately. Luckily we had Norg. Dude's a big boy, took hits and gave them back. He looked like he had things well under control, so Zivilyn sat on the steps and just kind of watched. He wasn't looking so hot after the ambush, either. Nez and Sugarmother were kicking some ass, though. Eventually we killed most of them, then Norg chased the last one into the jungle. We spent the night at the top of the pyramid and had a grand feast. There was even hot food!

In the morning, I awoke to Norg punching the door. It was earth shattering, and out comes this ancient elf. Even though Norg broke down his door, he allowed us into his... home I guess you could call it? Zivilyn was able to identify him as a Nethermancer. Turns out he was training bats. Maybe he was also a beastmaster? He was fascinated with a couple of different creatures. He even offered to sell us some Shrieker Bats! Easy job for once! But the stipulation was we had to go get them ourselves, I guess? I wasn't really paying attention.

Next we started looking for the Shrieker Bats with the help of some mystical magic moxy. It wasn't too difficulty to find where they lived. We entered and moved through the cave, eventually finding the nesting grounds. Of course, Norg startled them. He slipped on some bat shit and slammed his fist against a wall to steady himself. These things were loud! And one of them threw wind at us to knock us over! After knocking out a few of them, and Norg killing one of them, Nez told us to stop attacking and they would leave us alone. After they calmed down, we were able to capture a couple of them. Reyis and Zivilyn decided to keep them.

I didn't know how sweet of a deal this would be. The mission was one of the easier ones, except for Reyis's injuries at the pyramid, and I got a buddy to go to the Floating City! Even better, he's an Elementalist! I'll have to pay super close attention to him when we go there. I want to be one someday!
