Pre-gen characters?

Postby Mechphisto » Thu May 12, 2016 6:12 pm

I kind of bring this up in another question I posted about pre-made dramas... but I think it's worth it to be stand-along:
Any collections or links anyone has to decent pre-gen characters good to hand out to new players at conventions? Or for new players to use for first couple sessions before making their own?

I adapted the ones on "Into the Dark" for the FSR version and they work fine. I use them in most conventions.
Other than that I create new PC's according to the story needs!

Maybe we should a have section here for PC.

I'd suggest against stock characters. They can often be unweidly, especially in a one-shot and worse they can create unexpected complications if you don't think them through the way a player might. If I were running a one shot I would start with an element that attaches each character to the story and build the character around that. So if the story involves a diplomatic mission I'd build a noble that has strong obligations that drive them to take on the mission but poorly developed diplomatic skills so they'll depend on the other characters more. If I make an alien character it will be the race that is at the center of the story. If I make a Priest it will be of the sect that has a political or financial stake in the story. I also like to stock the pregenerated folder with characters that have esoteric knowledge useful to the campaign. Perhaps they know a lot about the history or economy of the setting of the story or they have useful contacts or allies in the region. My goal is always to ensure that whatever character you pull from the pile you will have a moment in the game where it's all about you.

Also, in a game at a convention or for new players, making your own characters allows you to tailor the background to be very specific about their role in the game and spell out their perception of the other characters.
