New Setting/RPG

Postby Jaracove » Mon Aug 22, 2016 11:11 am

Have the designers ever considered taking the ED system and using it for another different setting? Perhaps one with not so much an emphasis on magic?

I think the core of the rules are very good and would serve well.

The ED setting so completely tied into the world I'm not sure it would work well in another setting. It is much the same as the reverse where people have tried to use the ED setting in other systems. It just seems to miss on the whole. No other gaming system or setting has ever grabbed in the way that ED did. Others have been great, but nothing that immersed me as this one.

1879 uses Core Step as well as Earthdawn - 1879 is a lower magic system. I think it would work well for other systems up to a point, but Earthdawn specifics rules such as dealing with patterns etc would likely need dropped.

I have long felt that the core mechanic is pretty robust, and able to handle more than just Earthdawn. As FWD says just above, 1879 uses the "Core Step" mechanic, as will the upcoming Demonworld RPG.

Just before GenCon it was joked that, given the work done to adapt the mechanics to 1879, we have a solid foundation to expand the mechanics into the superhero genre. Which... well... would be something, I guess.

I've been running my own world with ED 4th ed. for four games now, and it seems to work decently well. My types of magic are somewhat different from ED, but it's a decent fit. I hacked together a "Channeling" talent for priests so that's it ok for players but very useful for NPCs. I've downplayed naming and the magicalness of the martial disciplines (one player has a decidedly non-magical character, but the warrior is a very good fit for the character) and slightly altered training times. Horrors are rare, astral space is pretty clean, but raw magic will get you curious spirits or chaotic magic so they still tend to avoid it. There are no t'skrang, obsidimen, windlings, air sailors, sky raiders or group patterns, but I did add stats for halflings and goblins. I can write a more formal description in a few weeks if anyone's interested, but I first have to get through my move and organizing the info booth of our con.

My players started with 54k - 64k exp (yeah, not calling it legend), so mostly 5th or 6th highest circle.
(Previously BESM 3rd ed, previously Praedor (Finnish local system) with a bunch of homebrew including a magic system (x2), previously D&D Next beta test (at least 3 versions). My players have accepted that the system will change every now and then. :D )

Currently most interested in seeing the 4th edition shamans, since it would probably be a better fit for the local witches. (I'm currently using a mixture of nethermancer, a bit of elementalist, and some pattern item magic.)

I think the core stuff is a great system, and I think it would be really fun for a low powered campaign characters who occasionally have to deal with stuff that is way out of their league - which is why I'm going to give that 1879 stuff to myself for my birthday.
