The chance of hitting someone with a stone fired by a mortar is weak : the stone doesn't explode like a grenade and there's only one stone fired without any true aiming (and the stone is only as big as a head - take a look to the miniatures). So, the probability to hurt seems logical to me. It's different for the big stone (it explodes) or the bullet (there's a kind of aiming), but those artilleries have a high cost - which can be too much but I assure you they are fully playable. I used them : Isthak army in 1200 pts, 1 Snow Canon at 380 pts ; Empire army in 1200 pts, two Canons at 160 pts each ; Isthak army at 1500 pts, 2 Snow Canons at 380 pts each. And so on. Didn't win all the time and one time we didn't fight at all - my opponent didn't want to quit the woods to face my 2 Snow Canons  and I was waiting for him patiently...

The thing is to create the army based upon your expensive artillery and not taking the artillery after creating the army.

In fact, they cost only 40 pts each with all the errata. So, recruiting 4-5 of them is easy (160-200 pts : it's the cost of one unit). I did use 2 Horror's of Khybor (Empire - don't have 4 of them yet but I will) at a time and had great fun playing them against Elves : my opponent had to move toward me to start shooting with his archers while I was firing since the first turn. And his units were not really close to each others (to avoid being touched by deviation), so I had the advantage of number when I engaged them with my fighters.

Concerning the fact that Orcs can set fire with artillery... well, we're speaking of Orcs here  I don't see them handling technology as easy as Men or Dwarves. They can use fire with their archers and that's not so bad compared to some other (Goblins, Isthak, Dark Elves) !

Quick questions: Is the rulebook availeable at Gencon already the 3rd edition or the 2nd? Also: Are the printed armybooks supplied with their respective recruitment cards? If so: Have the orcs and empire army books all the cards or only those, that were in the original armybooks? (i.e.: Are they missing the Berserkers, etc.)

Hi Wendigo,

They are Second Edition books (Third Edition won't be out for some time yet). Copies of the army cards that were in the original books only, sorry. There will be download packs for them, however (which will be available after Gen Con), which have full color versions of the cards/inserts in the army books, plus any "miscellaneous stuff that we couldn't squeeze into the page count".

If you have copies of the Rulebook/Army Books already, you probably don't need these. If you want a smaller portable version, however, then this is where to find them.

Kind regards, James

I still use the free of charge german 2nd edition armybooks from Hobby products and would like to get my hands on some professionally printed army cards, so I think I will put the money for the army books away untill the third edition ist out.

Thanks for the honest answer.

Hello everyone !

I know I'm ressurecting this topic (hey, I play Isthak ! Necromancing is my way-to-go  ), but I didn't want to create another one for the same subject.

So guys, where are you with the 3rd edition ? Can we have some informations (come on, it' Christmas ! We deserve a gift, we have been good boys. Or good beastboys. Or something.) ?

And, once again, thank you for covering up the game ! All miniatures re-edited is a very good thing !
